Title: Teenager's terrifying 1st turn crash at 171mph in Macau F3 GP race
Post by: John S on November 19, 2018, 02:22:25 PM
The first turn of Sunday's Macau F3 race saw a melee of cars colliding and Sophia Floersch's car became airborne after crashing into Jehan Daruvala and then Sho Tsuboi at the Lisboa Bend.

The 17-year-old slid out of control on the outside of track limits and appeared to be vaulted into the air as she passed back over kerbs, hitting Japanese driver Sho Tsuboi before slamming into the temporary structure that housed photographers and marshals.

Tsuboi was discharged from hospital after treatment, while two photographers and one track marshal were also hospitalised.

Floersch's team principal Frits van Amersfoort has revealed that the 17-year-old was travelling at speeds of up to 276km/h (171.6mph) - YES 171mph!!!! - when she was involved in a terrifying crash which left her with a fractured spine.

Van Amersfoort shared his disbelief that his driver was able to survive at such high speeds.
"It was nearly a rocket. Surviving was incredible," he told BBC Radio 5 live.
"We reckon she was travelling at 276km/h (171.6mph) at the time."
"We were lucky that she was flying because she went over a barrier. If she had hit the barrier it would have gone a lot worse."

The stricken driver Sophia Floersch remains in surgery after suffering a spinal fracture. An update posted from the German drivers' social media account confirmed that the German has successfully undergone a first round of procedures.

Here's hoping you get well soon Sophia.

No news yet on why the car was travelling at that speed.

If that was in a movie, we'd all be laughing at it, saying it could never happen. I'm glad that nobody was killed. The fence collapsing probably absorbed a good bit of the impact.

The situation was a total mess. I hope the back fracture for Sophie is of a type that is reasonably straightforward to heal, and that everyone else makes a swift and full recovery.

That's about as bad a crash as I've ever seen. I hope her
back injuriesdon't causeher any future problems.

The fact it was survivable is amazing - the marshals also had a very lucky escape.

Although it's further down the formula (from F1) ... it still salutes the safety level of motorsport these days.   It's always eye opening to hear stories from Moss/Stewart etc, outlining the deaths in motorsport on an annual basis back in the day!!

Even the recent Hulk's 'flip' in Abu Dhabi, reminded us of the potential risks which still exist in F1.

Regardless, I wish her only the best, as that was a disturbing accident!!!!

Best Regards,
Cal :)
