Title: A.J., Tony Stewart & Foyt's 500 Winning Roadster
Post by: cosworth151 on May 12, 2017, 03:13:13 PM
This is fun. Tony Stewart takes some laps around The Speedway in the roadster that A.J. won the 1964 500 with. After that, A.J. talks about those days with Tony & Robin Miller.

A few points for those of you who aren't familiar with the roadsters. They were powered by 4 cylinder Offenhauser engines. The Offys were mounted laying over almost flat on their right sides. You'll note a small tube sticking out of the grille on the car. That is for the starter. The engine crankshaft, driveshaft and diff are in a straight line back from that tube. In fact, the drive shaft runs right beside of the driver.

The cars had solid axles front and rear. The teardrop shaped tank on the left side is the oil tank. The fuel tank is in the tail of the car.

I like that AJ said he was surprised it ran on straight alcohol because they always ran nitro.
