I thought I would begin a thread on the preseason.
This is for several things from launches, to testing, the dates of which are beginning to come out.
I miss the "big deal" launches, but . . .
This thread can still have the photos and discussion of comparing features. I am beginning to get excited about 2017, as we are only about 10 weeks or so away from the first race.
So far:
2017 F1 car launch schedule
23rd February: Mercedes, Silverstone
24th February: Ferrari, Fiorano
2017 F1 pre-season testing
27th February-2nd March: Circuit de Catalunya
7th March-10th March: Circuit de Catalunya

There's a lot of living to do in that 10 weeks butI'm also quite keen for they to get on with it, is too early for my predictions Wizz? :tease:

Add this to the launch schedule:

21st February: Renault

It is looking like they will all be unwrapping their 2017 entries the week leading up to the first test.
-
McLaren will roll out their new car on Febuary 24th. I wonder if their announcement graphic portends a new (or, should I say, return of the old) paint scheme. A very nice shade of
orange rocket red there!
-
I keep hoping the orange will come back but they always seem to use it in testing but never racing.

Wasn't the testing/season paint schemes part of the McLaren/Project 4 merge?
With Ron out of the picture, is anyone left from the Project 4 days?

The orange was the colour of the McLaren Can/Am cars, well before the Project 4 time. Rocket red is quite different and was created as a part of the McLaren logo colour scheme in 97.
Rocket red really came to prominence when used as a special team T shirt to celebrate wins sometime in the new millennium, the whole team would all don the shirts for a posed photo opportunity, this has been adopted by other team -notably RBR and Merc, in different colours naturally. The highlights on last season (16) cars was Rocket red.

Yes, I mean that while the team used the McLaren name it really was more Project 4, and continued to use the Orange in testing before going to the 'real' colours for the season. So with Ron out of the sport, is there anything left of Project 4, opening the door to focus on 'McLaren' traditions?

The use of Orange for McLaren F1 cars pre-dates Project 4, the McLaren M7A ran in 68 & 69 seasons in Orange livery - that's before sponsors took over so it was a definite choice by Bruce way back then. The first McLaren F1 win at the 68 Belgian GP was in Orange livery.
Not sure Ron has really put cars out in Orange, in the early days and for many years after the merger of project 4 with McLaren, Marlborough who bank rolled Ron's takeover would have insisted on only their colour scheme. I'm pretty sure it was Martin Whitmarsh who started the trend of putting the test cars out in Orange.
Rocket red use on the company name logo in 97, corporate signage and later on the race winners T shirt would all necessarily have to have been signed off by Ron, if not instigated by him.

I'll go out on a limb and say that a lot of the players will look like RBR from last year. A matte background and bright foreground. Sure looked good on TV.

How about the team wars. Will Max beat Daniel,Lewis beat Bottas,Kimi

I'm most curious about Massa/Stroll. If Stroll doesn't acclimatize to F1, is Massa a bad mentor? If Stroll wipes the floor with Massa, will he be embarrassed for coming back?
Of course, I'm just excited about a Canadian racing for Williams...

I would choose Daniel, Lewis, Seb and probably Stroll.

I wonder how many teams will do like Red Bull and come out in a camouflage scheme for the testing paint job to hide details from cameras.
We shall see in just over a week now.

Pictures are coming:

Sad the Sauber hasn't managed to find more sponsorship yet. Perhaps they have but it won't go on the car until the first race.

In general, I like what I am seeing of the 2017 cars.
-
FI is sporting a big empty billboard...hope they sticker it up soon.
-
Most of the stickers were from Mallya's companies. With Vijay potentially not being in charge by the end of 2018 (not sure how he is still a free man, to be honest), this is the right time to be showing the sponsor world that here is some prime estate to be taking, that won't clash with the "loud" reputation of the Mallya conglomerate.
PS: I just spoke to Dad about it and we both agree that the Force India is ugly. And I don't call many things ugly. (Specifically, to me it appears as if the designers couldn't make their mind up whether they wanted their car to be a Renault or a McLaren, so made it half of both. As long as it's fast, I suppose...)
-
You will find that it's much prettier if it's fast. ;)

Here is the Merc.

Interesting. I assume that the black vertical fin on the nose (between the suspension arm attachment points) is part of the test kit. There are a pair of odd little fins just in front of the mirrors, too. I haven't seen them on any of the other new cars.

Maybe they are allowed a certain amount of vertical bodywork and since they're skipping the shark fin, they have some options left over ;) ;)
-
James Allison joining Merc is a bad omen, a guy who is reknown for tapping unbelieveable aero advantages joining the team with the most powerful engine.

Ferrari

I like the WC Fields mouth side air intakes, and the wing on the shark fin seems to be unique so far. I LIKE it...

And a black & red McLaren:

I liked the flashback of the previous F1 Ferraris. I certainly didn't expect it to carry Alfa Romeo badging.
-
So after how long did Mclaren drop P4 from its name??
-
Kimi already bucking the bosses - took his hands away from his back and put them on his hips...standout kinda guy. Even made Giovinazzi nervous that he wasn't following protocol. :D :D ;)
I missed the AR badge Cos...where're they hiding it?
-
At the very back of the main body, just below the shark fin.
-
Odd. Rumors have circulated that FIAT was looking to sell either or both Alfa and Maserati.

The RBR is a bit too purple for me. Boring on the outside, but judging by all the hullabaloo over their suspension, there are some trick bits under the skin.
Telling is that the Haas doesn't have any more sponsorship than the Sauber. I would have thought they could have chased down a bit more in the off-season. I guess F1 is still too expensive a gamble for most marketing departments.

The t-tail fin looks like the design fad of the season.

Hamilton already up to his old tricks: Bottas running in the morning in the cooler weather while the team works the bugs out, and Lewis in the afternoon when the track is rubbered in and the car is running smooth.
Of course Hamilton has the better head to head time!

Ha ha I think it'll be interesting tomorrow as Lewis is first up with Bottas in the afternoon so rolls reversed, a quote from Bottas said that they are not looking for lap times just wanting to put miles on the car. On that thought! Do they use just one chassis? surely they would want to run both chassis so I'm assuming each driver is running his own car? Does anyone know?
-
Andy I think they'll run both chassis so Lewis can get
the sone.Sorry couldn't help myself ;)

I just hope Mercedes isn't too far ahead of the other teams.I'd love to see

So far the data shows that Merc isn't running away with the show...I know they are trying to spin that in the press, but I won't believe it until I see it. Ferrari and even Williams are in decent shape on day 1, and we have barely seen the RBR. Day two is struggling to get going.
Stroll had a little spin today, but just damaged that antenna thingy on the back end. I think those are going to break like toothpicks when a car hits a kerb too hard or any kind of shaking. I'm not even sure I understand the physics that makes them even useful. How can such a delicately attached puny wing make more than a few grams difference in downforce or lift?
-

I can't see the benefit either, but I get the feeling some of them are a bit of a bodge job - Ferrari put the cat amongst the proverbial pigeons when they launched their car with the winglet.
IMHO the others are guessing there must be some advantage to it, needing to check it out they've have stuck them on where they can. Hence they are fragile.
Whether this is really an advantage or just a Ferrari misdirection has still to become clear, testing always throws up a few added elements trying fool others whilst seeking to keep real advances quiet. ;)
-
Many of those small fins aren't to create downforce. They are to direct air flow where it will do the most good. Aim the maximum smooth air at the rear wing. Direct it into a radiator or cooling duct. That sort of thing.
The big news for me: K-Mag & Haas P4! :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:
(Yeah, I know, test times don't mean all that much. Still.......)

It is interesting and looks like it could be "big news" as you say Cos, as that time would have put him P4 yesterday too. I know it is only testing and that doesn't always translate into race performance when rating them, but . . .

I presume Liberty will be courting them.

The problem with trying to establish a pecking order during testing is that we have no idea what fuel loads they are carrying and how much sandbagging is going on its not until Aussie that we'll find out.
-
True Andy, and we also do not know what a team is actually working on developing/testing on any given day. There is some indication of pace during testing, but nothing certainly upon which one could bet the farm, as they say.

And why not? With so much down time in F1 compared with Monster Cup (is that what they really call it now?) any 'real' racer is going to look for opportunities to race in other series.
I'd love to see a bunch of F1 drivers spending their off time at American ovals. I'd watch (and I don't watch Monster Cup (that's kinda catchy) racing on a regular basis).

One of the problems I see is NASCAR and F1 compete in about the same
months. They need something like the old Tasmanian Series in the winter months.
Not FE either
-
The problem I see with it could be called the Kubica Factor. He was one of the most promising drivers in F1 before his injury in another racing series. I'm sure that will influence any team managers who has to decide if their drivers can race in another series.

That's true. I would suggest that running in another car they own in a 'Top' series would certainly ease any fears that owners have.
Ultimately this would be a way to make sponsors happy by getting more appearances, and with different audiences, from the same driver.
Besides, we've seen from Montoya and Webber that letting a driver do what they want in their off time isn't necessarily safer than letting them race!

Drivers will not be allowed to race in other series history will dictate that which Wehrlein has proven of late so the disruption to a team mid season would be too much.

Marko says it will be mid season before RB can hope to compete with Merc. True or "Poor Me" BS? Renault has been ordered to change their center wing mount before Oz.
I wouldn't believe anything Marko has to say. King of BS.

F=1 Fanatic has a chart showing what tire each driver used for his best lap. Bottas was on ultrasofts, Hammy on supersofts, but the Ferrari guys were both on softs.

-
Taking into account tyres the Renault cars have posted some pretty good times along with Ferrari on softs. But it's still only testing so there's no way to know fuel loads or engine settings.
-
Watching the new flatter, wider cars and tires almost looks like one of those old 4:3 TV shows stretched out to 16:9

I hope this is an indication of things to come.
Massa putting Williams at the top of the time sheet.
Ferrari and Red Bull both looking very competitive.
Merc may be sandbagging, but Massa's time is competitive with what Hamilton posted last week.
-
Williams top? Someone is sandbagging With Mercedes 4th and RB 3rd the only time we will find out for sure is during qualifying in Melbourne.
Oh I should say that Ron will be smiling as its not his problem!
-
Wow...if they are sandbagging, it's not by much. Times are already 2sec faster than last year's pole lap.
-
And as day two comes to an end, things look even brighter for some.

I think Vettel's Ferrari just raised the bar.
-
I read many sites for F1 news and found the following bits here and there.
Vettel says Ferrari has more in reserve.
Hamilton says he's concerned about Ferrari's pace.
Max says RB will be competitive, but Ricciardo isn't so sure.
Force India says they need to find more speed before OZ.
Alonso says the Honda is slow and unreliable and is hurting chassis work.
Palmer says the Renault is a huge step forward in all respects.
-
Vettel says Ferrari has more in reserve.
Hamilton says he's concerned about Ferrari's pace.
I think there may be truth in these statements. In live commentary yesterday one of the F1 sites suggested that taking the best split times from a few laps of Vettel in the Ferrari gives a fastest time of 1m 18.390. Clearly a stellar lap - but achievable they say as Vettel was slowing in the last sector on his two fastest recorded laps.
-
Well, two weeks from right now, we'll see how it all has turned out. We will have some real on-track times at a circuit where they are actually setting to race on over the weekend.
Some speculation and commentary about Ferrari do seem to be true however, looking at the combined times from the two weeks in Barcelona.

Ferrari quicker than Mercs, and Mercs marginally quicker than Williams by all appearances.
Red Bull, Renault and STR all look extremely tight, with Haas and Force India nipping at their heels.
-
I believe Ferrari was fastest in testing last year and we know how that turned out.
-
Well, I think Mclaren Honda are sandbagging, they will be fastest in Oz :) Either that or their engine is a sandbag.
-
I think in the 2016 pre-season testing that the Ferrari was quickest out of the box, and in fact, STR (maybe Williams) were also faster than the Mercs at some point.
-
It has been very interesting following testing, owing to the new rules. While the new cars look somewhat better, they are spoilt by all the winglets and fins, and I'm not at all persuaded that the racing will be enhanced, but at least the cars look more dynamic and seem faster.
Ferrari may have the upper hand, but I still feel as though Mercedes are holding back on their ultimate performance, and Red Bull always brings upgrades to the first race. McLaren meantime are in deep trouble. They may even be on the last row of the grid. The chassis does not seem that great and the Honda engine's performance and reliability are poor.

I like that too.
Vettel is down-playing their pace in testing.
Hamilton is wary of Ferrari pace in testing.
Paddy Lowe says Williams can develop a championship car.
Tonight, the rubber, as they say, meets the road.
