Title: Advent Competition 2010
Post by: Wizzo on November 30, 2010, 10:56:25 AM
Yes its that time of year when we wish peace and goodwill to all men (and woman).
The GPWizard way of joining all our international friends together in the festivities is by subjecting you to the nail biting, hair pulling, wall punching game, commonly known as the GPWizard Advent Competition (2010).

The Competition (Please read carefully)
Every day for the first 24 days in December a Question or Letter will be placed on the GPWizard Advent Calendar (navigation at the top of the page). Answers to the questions also represent a letter. i.e Answer = Jenson Button then the letter for the day will be either 'J' or 'B'. This will be clearly indicated on the day.

The aim is to collect 24 individual letters and rearrange them into a Christmas sentence.

Once you have the complete sentence you will need to PM with your answer. It is in your interest not to post your answer on the site as members who have not been following the competition will all know your answer.

I will only accept answers received on 24th December.

If more than one correct entry is received then the winner will be chosen at random. It would not be fair to accept the first answer due to worldwide members time zones.

If you miss a question or letter, then you can still try and complete the sentence, it will just be a little harder for you. There may be a bonus letter day if you're lucky.

Any questions or comments? Please post them below for all to see.

The Prize - Mark Webber 2010 Racing Gloves

These gloves are very cool and are exact replicas as used by Mark Webber in the 2010 F1 season. All shapes colours and embroidery have been replicated perfectly.

The Rules
One Question or letter will be placed on the advent calendar per day.
Answers to each Question will represent a letter i.e if the answer is Jenson Button then the letter for the day will be either 'J' or 'B' as indicated on the day.
The completed Christmas sentence must be PM to me on 24th December - all submissions before or after this date will be dismissed.
If more than one correct entry is received then the winner will be chosen at random.

Good Luck!

When I saw it was a Webber prize, I almost fell off my chair, then had to eat half a box of painkillers from jumping up and down in excitement..... After they kicked in though... I realised I'm up against some truly top class people....

Wiz you just keep setting the bar higher and higher in generosity and fun!!

Your personal Aussie Fan Rom

P.S. This isn't sucking up...... ok... it is a little.... :-P

What the heck is today's hint about???  I'm a bit of a Star Wars fan, but I had no idea there was a Jedi Archive to begin with, and if there is, who takes care of it.  I'm going to go ask my son!   ;)
Title: Re: Advent Competition 2010
Post by: Scott on December 15, 2010, 07:24:25 PM
Ok, I asked him, and - blow my mind - he gave me the answer without hesitation, in fact he even added an inflection that meant 'of course, stupid!'.

However...he went over some technicalities that challenge your use of the present tense, since of course it happened 'a long, long time ago' and in fact said archivist was killed off near the end of the last movie (actually #3, which gets into another chronological issue altogether).  I'm tellin' you, you can't put anything past this kid.   :D :D

Since no successor was named, I'm gonna use the name he gave me.

Merry Christmas!   :D :D

(15) This had me stumped too Scott, searching on the net can be very confusing on this one for reasons I have no wish to expand on at this moment, ;) all I'll say is Wizzo is upto his tricky ways again  >:D)

Luckily one of my sons also gave me the answer without hesitation, 2 mins after he came in from work.  :-[  He's old enough not to add the 'Doh!' expression thank the Lord.  :D

The younger generation certainly know their Sci-Fi.   8)

Word of advice from the management  :D

You will need the GPWizard toolbar installed on your browser over the weekend to see Saturday's & Sunday's letters. If you haven't got the toolbar already then get it! You have been warned.

Mac users please make yourself known by sending me a PM.

I have to say with the exception of a couple, this year's Advent Competition hasn't had me whacking my head on a wall, like in previous years.  Thanks Wizzo, for not wasting hours and hours of my time that should be devoted to proper Christmas preparations.
 :good: :good:

As for the letters I have so far, unless it's Merry Christmas in a foreign language, I have no idea how they fit together.

The best gift at Xmas is easy to see
It’s not wrapped in paper or under the tree
Cos' the best gift at Xmas is an advent clue
That’s hiding in your toolbar, just waiting for you!

If you can't see it yet then you’ll just have to wait
Make sure you check later, make it a date
Have a seat and a drink, maybe a Gin and some fizz
Then have a good grumble about that pesky old Wiz!

I have had a major problem with my work laptop and have had to leave it with our IT guy over the X-mas break. The other problem I have is I've subsequently lost the Word sheet where I was storing the questions, answers and letters for the advent competition. In the words of the Dragons "I'm Out!".  :'(

Good luck to everyone else who is taking part.  :good:

Only 2 sleeps to Christmas, hope Santa is kinder than your IT hardware.

I got all but the last word, and although I figure I knew the last word, my leftover letters were quite a bit out, so I must have made some mistakes along the way.

Yeah I got most of the letters, but unexpectadly I was needed to do allsorts of things on the evening of the 23rd and Xmas Eve itself, so I never got the time to figure out the slogan in time to send it.

Ah well 'ce la vie' there is always next year, most of the fun is trying to get our heads round Wizzo's offbeat question choices, I think I got one or two of the oddball ones this year - that's progress. ;)

Odd ball questions... John I had a hard time with the easy ones.... and even when he just put a letter up.... I questioned whether there was a trick to it... LOL.... I love advent comps....

The first one was still by far my favourite... almost everyone went insane just looking for letters....

I'm sure the real Peter Gabriel can go and get his own Mark Webber signed gloves though...    ;)

I thought the hat would be bigger this year (I think this was also the answer two years ago guys...remember?).    :fool: :fool:

Scott, Re No. 14...I went to Wiki for that season and they clearly stated that Pedro De La Rosa was the third driver that year, so I went for "O".  I missed the "East" reference somehow. It's always a challenge to get all of them right, isn't it? At least for me it is. Lotta fun ferreting them out, though. Happy New Year all. GR.

Sorry for the confusion, I never promised it would be straight forward.  ;)

McLaren replaced the name "West" with "East" in protest at the advertising ban before the sense of humour police at the FIA made them stop; they subsequently used their drivers' names instead. Trying to find a picture of the car in question is very tricky indeed.
Title: Re: Advent Competition 2010
Post by: Scott on December 28, 2010, 09:31:14 PM
I found one below, just never saw it race  :D :D

Seriously, I found this quote on Sportscomet:

Lotus used to write "Lotus" instead of "Camel" (1987/88/89/90) and Jordan used to put their drivers' names instead of Benson & Hedges (1998+), for example. McLaren and Ferrari were the first teams to use the "bar code", Once they had ended their relationship with Marlboro, McLaren also replaced the name "West" with "East" in protest at the advertising ban before the sense of humour police at the FIA made them stop; they subsequently used their drivers' names instead. BAR (British American Racing) got around the advertising ban by naming their team after their tobacco sponsor, British American Tobacco.

I just saw on PG's Facebook page he won the competition this year. Man, the youngsters are kicking the "oldsters" butts lately! I didn't even try this year as I didn't know the first 2 questions and didn't want to rely on searching the Internet for the answers. Next year I'll use the Internet though just for fun as it seems a good time was had by all. Thanks Wizzo!
