Title: What Do You Think?
Post by: Chameleon on July 18, 2007, 12:44:00 PM
This is something that affects all forums but is worth thinking about even so.  GP Wizard currently has well over a thousand members yet there is a hard core of only thirty or so who express an opinion.  Presumably the rest stand and watch or have wandered off into the darker realms of the internet, never to be seen again.

Why are so few prepared to get actively involved?  Is it fear of being wrong or ridiculed?  Apathy (but why join at all then?), busy-ness or loner-ism?  I must say that I have yet to see an instance of anyone coming under fire for their opinion in this forum and we represent a wide range of views, supporting many different teams and drivers, yet everything is conducted in a civilised and sensitive manner; I doubt that it is shyness holding people back, therefore.

To come to the point, is there anything we can do to encourage people to contribute?  I have some thoughts of my own (when don't I?  ;) ), but I'd like to hear what others have to say on the matter.  And, if any of "the silent ones" want to throw in a suggestion or a few, I'd be really interested.

I really don't have an answer.

I do confirm that this has been the most civilised forum it has ever been my pleasure to subscribe to. Yes, we disagree, but we don't go about hurling insults at each other - except at Max and Bernie but they don't matter. :yahoo: and besides, they deserve it.

I spent many years subscribing to an RC car forum from the USA and that was always busy, any time of day or night. I've lost a bit of interest in RC these days so I don't visit it much, but considering that Formula 1 must have 1000 times the interest of RC car racing world wide, and Max and Bernie give us so much to talk about, I really am surprised that this place isn't perpetually a hive of activity.

Perhaps we could have the views of those that read but don'tcontribute. I'm sure there are many. There are always more guests than registered members on line.

We've always had hundreds of members who you never see on the forum, or you will see them post once and that is it. I really don't have an answer either, as you both said, there is no nastiness or personal ridiculing, we don't always agree with each other, be boring if we did, I suppose you will always get an occasional acid remark but that is life, just don't take offence but give it back, sorry, no answer here.  :DntKnw:

Chameleon,I think your estimate of 30 who
express a opion is a little high.I think 12 to
15 would be a more realistic number.

Like it was mentioned there are numerous
guests looking the site over at any given
time.I believe many register just to see
the vids never to return.

I find it a pleasure to get to know the
new members as well as the old and
just hope we can keep growing

I was being optimistic in my estimate in case there were some who posted rarely but regularly - didn't want to offend anyone.  The point about the videos is a good one - I hadn't thought of that.

I guess all we can do is continue to be the best forum on the net with the most interesting and best-informed people and hope that others will become eager to join us.

Well, we are, aren't we?  ;)

I've had the same discussion at the AMVETS and the VFW posts I belong to - Hundreds of members, handfulls at meetings and functions.

I think some folk do just join for the videos and pix. I hope some of you will jump in with at least one post.

After all, that's how we all got started here. :D

This is a classic problem facing almost all types of online interaction except porn and adult stuff where you have more than needed.
The rules in the brick and mortar world probably will apply to in the cyber world too. We basically need to create excitement around the brand in this case our forum and attract participation of all types.
Why don't we start by sharing e-mails of all the members to some form of a committee who will than e-mail all the registered members about events and that we may need to build around the forum.
Guys flock to where the girls are .......

I've already mentioned this in another thread. One of the biggest off-putting aspects of this site is the number of forums. F1 has 8 alone.

There are many days when my internet time is restricted and I simply don't have the time or patience to trawl through the lot. For me, 8 forums is too much. But I accept that other like it that way, so here goes...........

A suggestion for GPWizard, is it possible to merge all the F1 forums into one 'read only and reply' super forum?

For example, every F1 thread can be read and replied to in one forum BUT the thread originator must start the thread in the relevent section (eg. History).

Keeps the different areas of discussion seperate for those that want it that way but throws the most recent threads in all areas together for those who'd prefer the opposite.

Your thoughts?

I don't see where it's that big of a deal.there one
formula one forum with 8 different subjects

Every morning I can usually read everything
in about 15 minutes before I leave for work.

Any other members have any thoughts on this?

I agree ! I don't think it is just that. We would have to want people to come here. And people go where there is action.

I personally never 'trawl' through the various subjects.......all you need is the new replies and new posts buttons and you are set.......that's all i need to rip through all the new posts and subjects since i last logged on.....it's quite efficient actually..

I would like to get involved more with the topics, but usually never know what to say, so just stick to reading what other members have to say!!!!

We really don't know that much, either. But we don't let a little thing like that stop us! :yahoo:

Jemma.  A very humble and noble reply for a lady. You mean to say we have finally found a lady that doesn't think she knows everything about everything? Lucky husband! :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

Rom.  I do that too. I simply click on NEW POSTS and update that way, but I agree with F1 Box to a certain extent - people do open new threads unnecessarily; I mean we have 3 or 4 threads all dealing with the present MAFIA saga with Stepney and Coughlan - they could easily be compressed to one thread.

Generally speaking, I personally have nothing but good words for this forum. Like everything, it could be better, but it could also be a damn site worse.

Sorry Mate, wasn't it you complaining about too many treads being opened, or have I got my nickers in a twist again ! ::)

Just can't get your mind off the day job!  :DD

I think Mike raised the issue about the number of threads.

I agree to an extent. Some rationalization is necessary and required on this forum. John has a good point.
But the crux is "how do we get more people in here to post, Participate" ?

John Bull has the answer - we need to stick the wets on.  They have wider "treads"...  :D
