I managed to get away from life for an hour yesterday and whipped up this video. This is at the entrance to Seymour Narrows, a famous part of the inland passage up the coast of British Columbia. Smack-dab in the middle used to be Ripple Rock which was just below the surface of the water and a lot of ships sank here until they literally blew it out of the water in 1958 which to this day is still the largest non-nuclear and deliberate explosion in North America.

Here's a video of the actual explosion. The vantage point in this vid from 1958 is only a few hundred feet from where I was flying. One thing to keep in mind is that the entrance to the narrows is actually about 1km across so that should give you an idea of the size of the detonation when it goes off!

 :o Wow - big explosion.  I wonder if they actually knew it would be that big.  Probably where Ripple Rock was is the deepest part of the narrows now.  Looks like debris showered both sides of the narrows hundreds of metres inland.

You are correct, the explosion was bigger than expected and debris was reported well outside what they considered a safe distance. Luckily nobody was injured and the job itself was a success.

Near the end of that explosion video you can hear a guy coughing...wonder if he had the wind knocked out of him...CBC looked like they may have been a little bit too close.   ;)
