Title: Dave Despain is Retiring
Post by: cosworth151 on January 13, 2018, 07:18:00 PM
If you've been a motorsports fan in the USA at anytime during the last four decades, you probably know of Dave Despain. His first racing broadcast was the 1975 Daytona 200 on ABC's Wide World of Sports. This week-end's Chili Bowl race from Tulsa, Oklahoma, will be his last.

At the age of 71, he says he's tired of chasing races every week-end. "I've been very lucky. I didn't have to pay a lot of dues and got to cover a lot of cool people and events. Doing the Chili Bowl one last time is a good way to go out."

Besides race coverage, he was the host of the long-running racing call in show, Wind Tunnel. My favorite memories of that series are from the USGP weekend at Indy. I remember nights spent in the Starting Line Lounge with race fans from around the world, Wind Tunnel on the TV. Dave would always get the conversation going.

Happy retirement, Dave, and thanks for everything. You will be missed.
