Title: F1 Head to Head: Kimi vs Alonso one Timeline. Sauber/Minardi to Ferrari & beyond
Post by: John S on May 17, 2020, 05:20:04 PM
Found this handy vid from Racing Statistics comparing F1 results for Kimi & Nando through 314 races.
Result is perhaps more surprising than most of us might guess.

Plenty of missed opportunities for both Kimi and Alonso.

It felt weird when Kimi didn't win a championship for McLaren, and then weird when he did for Ferrari.  Alonso's championships also felt weird to me, like Flavio had somehow tricked the world.  (Not suggesting that Alonso/Renault didn't deserve the wins, just Flavio's personality comes across as 'up to something')

Such very different drivers, overshadowed by Vettel and Hamilton.

Given they did win championships, it's hard to think of them as 'underrated', but history is going to see them as blips in the Schumacher/Vettel/Hamiton continuity.

I think Kimi’s lost opportunities (though surprised to see he came out on top) was more about bad luck with regards to team decisions and circumstances, while Alonso’s has almost always been a result of his ego, or that of his manager, Flavio.

Kimi was at his best when at Mclaren. With a little
luck he could have won a couple WDC's.

I think that Kimi had the best team synergy at McLaren, however, I think his skill remained high throughout his career, just with bad fit at his team.

I don't know that anyone on the grid appreciates racing at the level that Kimi does.  (Don't get me wrong, they're all phenomenally talented with an understanding of the history of the sport.  I just know that Kimi is more 'pure racer' than even Hamilton and Vettel.  He would race a dozen cars a week if they let him)

Yeah, he's kind of "Old School".
