Title: 2022 Emilia Romagna Heroes and Zeroes
Post by: Jericoke on April 24, 2022, 05:00:01 PM
Heroes

Red Bull, the team is running like a championship organization.  Giving the drivers cars to win, strategy to win, pit stops to win.

Max, win or DNF isn't a great pattern, but getting maximum points with the sprint, fastest lap and win is worth celebrating

Perez did a good job as Verstappen's wingman in 2021, and has stepped up his game in 2022.  He's giving Red Bull options for strategy, which is what they've been looking for.

Aston Martin, the only other team with a double points finish.

George Russell, there was a worry he wouldn't be able to compete with Lewis Hamilton.  I don't think anyone would have predicted that Russell would be consistently outshining Hamilton.

Albon had rough qualifying in a car that isn't ready for prime time, but he got up to 12th place.  He really is a great F1 driver, and I hope he gets a shot at glory (and I even more hope that Williams is the team that can provide that)

Zeroes
LeClerc is new to fighting for championships, but he can't afford those kinds of mistakes.

Hamilton might be struggling with the Mercedes, but he's always been able to compete for wins in less than stellar machinery.  Russell is showing the car might not be a championship car, but it's still third best.

Mick Schumacher looked really good compared to Mazepin, turns out Mazepin was just really really bad.  With K-Mag in the other Haas, Schumacher is looking out of place in F1.  Hopefully he can learn from his teammate and grow as a driver, otherwise he's going to fizzle out like other drivers with famous names.

Ricciardo, really should've known better than to put his car there.

Gravel traps don't add anything to spectacle.  Sainz was punted into it through no fault of his own.  The entire race had to be collected up behind the safety car to dig the car out.

Bad Luck
Alonso.  I've never seen a hole punched in a car like it was when Shumacher hit him!  Also I wonder if Lewis was able to see that chunk of car fly off. If so, that's got to be a little startling.

Sainz, I'm putting him in the bad luck category, but he is borderline zero.  He should be getting better results than he is.  Qualifying high helps avoid first lap incidents.

My zero of the race:

Günther Steiner - Mediums in a Sprint Race? Didn't the fact that Latiffi was only other car on Mediums tell you anything?

It made me think about Sir Stirling Moss's see-through Lotus 18 at Monaco in 1961:

Jeri hits the nail on the head once again with her views and I agree.
I am a bit disappointed in Merc as they seem to not be able to stop the car from porpoising like crazy.
Russell seems to be able to deal with it better then Hamilton which is a surprise.

Carlos is trying too hard to prove he belongs and it shows. Yes, Danny Ric caused the issue but Carlos should have not been where he was.

Gravel traps are a waste of time and do not help in any way. Pave them over.

Valtteri did a great job and is really coming into his own.
Lewis will retire at the end of this season as he has nothing else to prove and the car is crap, plain and simple.
Toto knows what he had so maybe get Valtteri back in the team beside George after Lewis vacates.

I wonder if Lewis is really up for trailing round in 14th for a whole race. I hope Mercedes come up with the goods in the second half of the season. Lewis has won a race in every single one of his F1 seasons and I would like that to continue. If Merc don't, I can see him quitting as Willy mentions. So I really hope they do. I don't want Max having a free run on the title for the next few years.

Which brings me to my next point. Already now I can see that Ferrari are not up to this. They got lucky with Max having two DNFs in the first three races. But if Red Bull have sorted out their gremlins it already feels like game over. I really hope I am wrong.

Finally, I can't help feeling these new regulations have actually made the racing worse, except for at the very front. Lewis was so obviously quicker than the cars in front of him, but thanks the "DRS train" no one ends up benefitting from DRS all the way up to 3rd or 4th. So whilst it is true the cars can more easily follow each other it just ends up neutralising the benefits of DRS. I wish DRS wasn't needed, but right now it's of no use to anyone anyway.

Which leads to a question that was going through my head in this race. Back in the old days (80s/90s for me) it was still possible to overtake without needing any boosts. You pulled out and hoped you could out-brake the guy in front. The more skilled drivers would manage, maybe also with the better setup car, to get head. But now it seems that the cars behave too similar under braking. You pull out and unless you can get that extra boost to pull ahead so you are clearly leading before braking into the corner you are not going to overtake. I realise the wet circuit didn't help, but this has been the case in all the races once the DRS train started forming. It seems impossible to out-brake someone into a corner this year.

This is hard for me, because the only thing that didn't feel like it was telegraphed in the sprint race was Leclerc being close enough to Perez to think about not being P3.

That said, I do want to nominate one hero:

- The marshal who stopped Carlos Sainz (who may have been disorientated from the spin) from accidentally wandering onto the track in the path of other cars. He probably thinks he was just doing his job, but that sort of neatly-averted disaster is why we need the marshals at every race. Thank you for your service.

I wonder if Lewis is feeling his age a bit. He seemed to get alongside Gasly several times but let Gasly out brake him every time. He doesn't trust the car to stay underneath him. I think George is faster because he trusts the car enough to take bigger risks with it. I also agree with rmassart, I think today might be a preview of the rest of the season. I fear if R/B has their gremlins sorted Max will cruise to an easy title with Perez right behind him. Ferrari seems to have already lost a step to them.

I hope Mercedes can find its way back by the summer break. If they can, I think Lewis will stay on for one more season. I think he'd really prefer a shot at a record eighth WDC and going out on top.

Toughest moment of the race for Lewis was probably when Max lapped him.  He must have been gutted.

Russell says he suffered chest pains during the race due to the porpoising of the Merc. He says it's not sustainable physically.

Yup, I hand it to Danny for stepping up and talking to Carlos, as he should.
Any chance Max will ever do that?
Na, don't think so.
