Title: Scott Speed Breaks Back in Rallycross
Post by: cosworth151 on August 20, 2019, 07:41:19 PM
Former F1 driver Scott Speed broke his back in three places as a result of a hard landing after a rallycross jump. He fractured three vertebrae, with the T6 damage being by far the most severe, in addition to some torn ligaments.

“My T6 was squished in half, and some pieces of the bone penetrated the spinal canal to a depth of about 6 millimeters -- which was not enough to damage the spinal cord.

“I’m the luckiest man alive,” Speed said from his hospital bed. “It has been the biggest emotional roller coaster of my life. The support has been overwhelming. I know when (IndyCar driver) Robert Wickens got hurt, he said how much the support helped. His injury turned out to be more serious than mine, but I know how it feels.”

Wickens crashed one year ago today at Pocono Raceway, suffering multiple serious injuries, including a fracture of the T6 vertebrae. He was among the first to reach out to Speed after his rallycross crash.

The doctors have determined that he doesn't require surgery at this time.

Get well soon, Scott!  :good:

I do hope a swift recovery for Scott!

It's always awful when someone is injured, but when highly trained athletes are injured, the opportunity for learning is great.  Add in race car drivers who are skilled at communicating minute feelings, it's possible that Scott will be able to help advance spinal injury understanding quite far.
