Title: Lotus May Move Production to China
Post by: cosworth151 on June 27, 2017, 03:56:29 PM
Chinese holding company Geely may move Lotus production to China. Geely, which owns Volvo, recently purchased a 51% stake in Proton, which owns Lotus. Geely is looking to make Lotus a high volume marque.

Growing up I never pictured China being such a ruthlessly capitalist country.  There must be an entire generation of Marxists, sociologists and economists just wondering how the 'Great Leap Forward' lead to mass marketing British sports cars.

Like Russia, I think although China is communist on top, the only way to survive on the bottom is to have an extremely well developed black market, which provides wonderful tools and skills to thrive in a capitalist economy.

Has anyone seen a Geely?
I saw one awhile back and it was horrid and cheap.

Not sure if you heard, but a couple years ago Russia dissolved the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.  They're not communists any more.

(I won't get into the debate if they were 'really communist' or not.  I just know that Mao didn't kill all those people to build discount sports cars)

And when it dissolved, people could see the black market that had for decades run the majority of the country...like China.

I think Russia ceased to be a democracy the day Putin walked into power.

I know what you mean about how the Soviet economy 'worked', I'm not surprised that China works the same way.

But this isn't a black market deal, it's overt capitalism.

I think they regard themselves as socialists now Jeri in both countries.

Don't ask me the real difference,  :DntKnw: I struggle to understand the definition of socialism in the UK so I'll leave it to everyone to use their own definition.  ;)

I think I prefer them making lots of sports cars to making lots of their own population disappear.  :P

I don't think Volvo's are made in Chine which they intend to do with Lotus.
They produce a ute under the company called Greatwall and they are cheaper than all other utes because they are cheap so I hope they don't go the same way with Lotus.

Volvos are built in Sweden, Belgium, the USA, and China that I'm aware of.

A little bit of a search and it looks like they assemble in China but don't as yet manufacture but that could change. If you use Skoda and VW as an example how Skoda was re-engineered into quality car by VW I hope the reverse does not happen.

It has happened to a certain extent with the Rover brand, however the Chinese parent company has found much resistance in the British market to the new products. I'm sure other manufacturers in China will be taking note.

Geely as Great Wall has established a dealer network in Britain, but there is no evidence that they are selling well.

MG has certainly gone down the tube since the Chinese took them over. The painfully ugly Buick Envision is also Chinese. Ford just announced that it will be moving production of the Focus to China. This is the same plant that Trump bragged that he kept from moving to Mexico.
