Title: Engine Penalties
Post by: lkjohnson1950 on September 22, 2017, 09:21:05 PM
While most of us ( and probably most of F1 ) wish the FIA would do away with grid penalties for power unit failures, the FIA in it's infinite stupidity will tighten the rules on engine parts replacement which will surely result in more ridiculous penalties being enforced. They might as well draw straws for grid spots.   >:D

At this rate you might qualify last and start on pole

The current system is a sham. Absolutely asinine. Everybody agree on that point. When the teams can't even figure out what the grid order is supposed to be, there is no hope for new fans to understand.

So, of course, the FIA's solution is to make it even worse!

Is the FIA trying to get spec Mercedes for everyone who isn't Ferrari, or just too caught up in its "eco-friendly" script to notice most people in 2017 remembered only the failures? I'm struggling to think of any other motive.

I appreciate where the FIA is coming from:  letting rich teams buy the championship by constantly upgrading/replacing engine parts isn't good for the sport.

So the question should be:   how to make engines affordable so they CAN be constantly upgraded and replaced.  The current rules are a joke, but I think the biggest joke isn't the penalties or forcing teams to use the same losing lump all season;  the biggest joke is engine manufacturers being allowed to sell inferior products to their 'customers'.

Change the rule: if Ferrari/Mercedes/Renault wants a new engine in their car, they HAVE to ensure their customers have been supplied with an equal or superior unit first.  Then watch as customer prices come down so that the big boys can put the latest and greatest engines in their own cars.

We might have to start another category in the Grid Game for number of grid penalty spots a team loses.

It's amazing how tone deaf the FIA are.  They just have to lurk around any F1 or racing forum and find out what fans think of the current engine rule penalties.  Why are they still focused on 'saving the teams money' anyhow?  They no longer work for Bernie to prop up the excuses for his insane race fees and portion of money he took out of F1.  Now they should show Liberty that they work for nobody and if Liberty wants to continue to run a healthy F1, they will have to give some money back to the sport instead of just fleecing it the way Bernie did for all those years.

I don't believe the sport is as broke as the FIA pretends.  There is enough cash in F1 for all the teams to survive and thrive, but the FOM has to reinvest in the teams is all.

Unfortunately this sequence of rule changes effectively has allowed Mercedes to buy the F1 championship several times over already, and this magnification is at risk of turning F1 into a spec series by default due to the expense for manufacturers. So F1 doesn't even has a solution to "how to make engines affordable", let alone "and also allow constant replacement of parts".

I agree, Mercedes have effectively bought the world championship several years running now.  Note that I'm not decrying their achievement, they deserve it, but it does show that, more than ever, Formula 1 is still a spending race.  The FIA has its head in the sand about this whole issue and the rules reflect their approach.

The rules are ridiculous as they stand, and this change makes them even more of a farce.  I want qualifying to be a contest of who is the fastest, not of constantly changing grids because of penalties.
