Though I am old enough, I am not quite as old as you would have me. It is the 80TH anniversary of his birth, not his death. A shame that since the reconfiguration of the circuit his memorial is basically in the middle of nowhere. It was a different time as they said.

Thanks, I was mixing up my post subjects.  I've corrected this now.

It is a shame, yes.  It used to be so much closer to the track and the old track had so much more atmosphere too.

I can't understand why they destroyed the old track. It could still be used for sports cars & vintage racing, much like the Nordschleife at the Nurburgring.

It seems unreal these days that a driver that dominated F1 and won the Indianapolis 500 still thought of himself as a farmer. It's also hard to remember that it was commonplace for a driver of that stature to be out in F2 car or a Lotus Cortina on a regular basis. In fact, Jimmy was supposed to driving in the BOAC 1000 sports car race at Brands Hatch that day. He went to Hockenheim because of a clause in his contract with Firestone.
