If Alonso is at Mclaren it will be the biggest surprise
in F1 history.Funny how Whitmarsh was sacked and
his results weren't a fraction as bad as Bouiller.

Thought it was ERS or something electric...
-
It was hard to hear the radio, but it sounded like he said the battery wasn't charged. Either the battery was bad or the ERS wasn't charging it.

Scott I was late as usual and when I heard Alonso was a
DNS I assumed with Honda's reputation it was the engine.

Isn't Honda responsible for the entire 'power unit'? If ERS isn't working, doesn't that come under Honda's efforts?

I thought Mclaren were electrical wizards with them making the engine management chips and all the rest, but you might be right, it could be Honda's baby. I wonder how Sauber is going to deal with Honda next year.

Under F1 regulations, the ERS is classed as a type of engine component (albeit a different type to the ICE that Stoffel's somehow used 5 of already).

McLaren makes the Electronic Control Units (ECU) used by all the teams. The FIA claims that mandating a standard ECU prevents teams from hiding launch control software in the system. The energy harvesting/storage systems are provided by the engine builders.
Honda says that Alonso's MGU-H wasn't working. They attempted to reboot it & accidentally shut down the entire engine.
MGU-H stands for Motor Generator Unit-Heat. It harvests heat from the turbo & exhaust and converts it to electrical energy. It is then stored in the Electrical Store (ES, what normal folks would call a battery pack). The ES also store power harvested by the MGU-K. It is driven by the wheels. That part of the system used to be called KERS. The stored electrical power can them be used for the hybrid power electric motors.
