A town near where I live has conducted an experiment using Uber as public transit. It doesn't make sense for a town of 35,000 to buy buses, yet not everyone can own a car or pay taxi rates either. City hall subsidizes Uber, so it costs $5 to get to common destinations. The costs to the tax payer is about a third of what the cost of a bus system would be.
Damnit, I'm used to hating Uber https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2017/08/04/ubers-search-for-a-female-ceo-has-been-narrowed-down-to-3-men/ (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2017/08/04/ubers-search-for-a-female-ceo-has-been-narrowed-down-to-3-men/), but this can solve some very real problems!
