Title: Ecclestone considering three new F1 races
Post by: davewilson on April 03, 2007, 03:05:43 PM
Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone said on Tuesday that the number of grand prix on the calendar could be increased by three to 20 a season.

"We could easily imagine that the number of grand prix in a season could be 20. That could be Mexico, India and Russia. South Korea is another candidate," said Ecclestone.

Ecclestone also raised the possibility of organising a new race on an urban circuit, as well as a night race.

"That (night race) would be ideal for Asia, since it would be the right time difference to be broadcast in Europe. It would also be very spectacular, it all depends of course on the circuit."

Concerning the reticence of team bosses over the creation of more races, he said: "The more we hold races in good countries, the easier it will be for them to find sponsors."

And amid the threat to the France Grand Prix at Magny-Cours in 2008, Ecclestone warned that no country had a monopoly on the sport.

"Formula One is very international, it's a world championship, not a championship linked to certain countries. When the the standards are not respected we have to go elsewhere," he added.

Does'nt he just make you sick, every time Ecclestone opens his mouth he makes it clear that he does'nt give a toss about the f1 fans who might just love a lot of the traditional circuits, yes, the newer technical circuits might be great but have'nt all f1 fans got their own personal favourite corner or section of track and that b*st*rd is trying to get rid of them all.

From where cosworth is sitting i bet he wishes he had a table cloth on his head.I know what you are saying, but these are the people with the money.Let us all not forget that point. They are willing to build brand new cicuits when we can only patch up what we have...You do not have to go on mastermind to find the best deal.

in the spirit of larry grayson

Three guys go to see a witch doctor about their problems.

One has a smoking problem, one is an alcholic and one is gay but wants to change.

The docter puts a curse on them that if any of them indulge their habits again they will die.

Two days later the alcholic dies because he gave in and had to drink.

The next day the gay guy and the smoker are walking down the street together. The smoker sees a cigarette lying and the ground and stops to stare at ir.

The gay guy looked at him and said "if you bend over and pick that up we are both f***ed"

Finally India is getting a Race in 2009 after a couple of aborted attempts in 2004 /05. I am really looking forward to it and India has a lot of F1 fans. Also considering that India will be one of the largest Automobile markets in the World makes absolute commercial sense.
Almost everyone worth their salt are there and throw in a couple of Indian Automobile Giants plus corporates, F1 financial future should be good.
I am also sure that all the car manufacturers support the move as it increases their visibility in that part of the World with two of the Worlds fastest growing economies and also gives an opportunity for Corporates based there to showcase themselves.
All in all a sound commercial move.

Whilst it is always nice to talk about historic tracks and races I do not agree with some of the above sentiments re camels and rickshaws. There are huge numbers of F1 fans all around the world (far more outside of Europe than inside) and they are also "entitled" to have race in their country. There are also tracks in Europe that suck big time (eg Hungaroring and Nurburgring). The key thing is whether Bernie can fill those seats in poorer countries. If he can then they are entitled to their races. With the increasing commercialisation of the sport and the manufacturers taking over the sport has to go where the markets are. If you don't like this then thing to target is the commercialisation of the sport, not the host countries.

Times change....
