BBC to show full deferred F1 races not just highlights
« on: July 30, 2011, 10:23:41 AM »

Martin Whitmarsh claims Bernie has confirmed this, but is it true?
We all know Mr Eccelstone's verbal promises can be more hollow than the nose cones on an F1 car, or is this his ploy to get round the free to air element of the concorde?
Why are the BBC talking about highlights if they will show the other half of the non live races later on in full rather than edited?  :DntKnw:

Extracts from an Autosport.com article, 29th July, by Jonathan Noble and Matt Beer:-

Despite initial concerns about the implications for viewing figures, Whitmarsh said after talks with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, he could see more positives for F1 - especially as Ecclestone had suggested that the BBC would still show full-length versions of its 'non-live' races rather than just highlights.

"From what Bernie has said it's better than expected," said Whitmarsh.

"The BBC will show every grand prix in full, half of them live and half of them deferred, so free-to-air is available to everyone."

"Sky sound like they are really going to commit to it as well, so it sounds like there is a little bit of competition between the BBC and Sky. So overall, from Bernie's view, it will increase the total viewership within the UK."

"Bernie assured me, and I asked him several times, the deferred coverage will not be highlights, it will be a full race."

Nobody's told the BBC this, as the official line is they're doing 75 minute-shows including build-up, analysis and "extended" (read 30-45 minutes) highlights.

I would'nt believe Ecclestone even if my life depended on it.

Bernie is now backtracking on what he told Martin.  ::) It appears Bernie now prefers the Beeb to run only a highlights programme.
Can we assume Sky is twisting his arm rather firmly in the background, via the contract, to stop the delayed full re-runs?

Nope - that was just what Whitmarsh thought.  He's wrong.  BBC will only have access to 10 races, no tape delay versions of the rest.

Apparently the teams couldn't care a less about the fans either...

No not true.  Either Martin was misguided in his information or he lied.  He works in F1!  Which of those options could it be?  After all he was one of those who said it was important to keep F1 totally free to air.

I think that's a safe bet.  Within hours of the original announcement, Sky was bragging about it being the only place to see the 'complete' F1 season next year.

I guess the wording of the Sky contract is far more clear than the wording of the Concorde Agreement guaranteeing free-to-air races.  Leave it to Bernie to make the CA as vague as possible so he can twist things however he likes.

Martin has not lied, in that video clip from BBC sport that I posted earlier in the thread Bernie can be heard admitting that he told the teams the full tape delay races could be shown by the BBC. It seems the Beeb, & Bernie, only wants to show highlights so as not take up too much prime evening airtime on the flagship BBC 1 channel, or frighten off easily bored types.

Maybe the Beeb can be persuaded to use Beeb 3, the crappy digital channel, for full re-runs, digital switchover will be almost complete next year so it will be available to most.
