Prelude to 2017 season
« on: January 04, 2017, 12:01:57 PM »
I thought I would begin a thread on the preseason.

This is for several things from launches, to testing, the dates of which are beginning to come out.

I miss the "big deal" launches, but . . .
This thread can still have the photos and discussion of comparing features.  I am beginning to get excited about 2017, as we are only about 10 weeks or so away from the first race.

So far:
2017 F1 car launch schedule
23rd February: Mercedes, Silverstone

24th February: Ferrari, Fiorano

2017 F1 pre-season testing
27th February-2nd March: Circuit de Catalunya

7th March-10th March: Circuit de Catalunya

Life is short - live each day to the fullest.

There's a lot of living to do in that 10 weeks butI'm also quite keen for they to get on with it, is too early for my predictions Wizz?  :tease:

It is looking like they will all be unwrapping their 2017 entries the week leading up to the first test.

McLaren will roll out their new car on Febuary 24th. I wonder if their announcement graphic portends a new (or, should I say, return of the old) paint scheme. A very nice shade of orange rocket red there!

I keep hoping the orange will come back but they always seem to use it in testing but never racing.

Wasn't the testing/season paint schemes part of the McLaren/Project 4 merge?

With Ron out of the picture, is anyone left from the Project 4 days?

The orange was the colour of the McLaren Can/Am cars, well before the Project 4 time. Rocket red is quite different and was created as a part of the McLaren logo colour scheme in 97.

Rocket red really came to prominence when used as a special team T shirt to celebrate wins sometime in the new millennium, the whole team would all don the shirts for a posed photo opportunity, this has been adopted by other team -notably RBR and Merc, in different colours naturally. The highlights on last season (16) cars was Rocket red.

Yes, I mean that while the team used the McLaren name it really was more Project 4, and continued to use the Orange in testing before going to the 'real' colours for the season.  So with Ron out of the sport, is there anything left of Project 4, opening the door to focus on 'McLaren' traditions?

The use of Orange for McLaren F1 cars pre-dates Project 4, the McLaren M7A ran in 68 & 69 seasons in Orange livery - that's before sponsors took over so it was a definite choice by Bruce way back then. The first McLaren F1 win at the 68 Belgian GP was in Orange livery.

Not sure Ron has really put cars out in Orange, in the early days and for many years after the merger of project 4 with McLaren, Marlborough who bank rolled Ron's takeover would have insisted on only their colour scheme. I'm pretty sure it was Martin Whitmarsh who started the trend of putting the test cars out in Orange.

Rocket red use on the company name logo in 97, corporate signage and later on the race winners T shirt would all necessarily have to have been signed off by Ron, if not instigated by him.

I'll go out on a limb and say that a lot of the players will look like RBR from last year. A matte background and bright foreground. Sure looked good on TV.
