But not till 2021 which is only four years away, we are lacking detail on this because there is none but the manufacturers and that includes VW have agreed to the change this was announced by the FIA.

I see nothing in that press release that points to a meaningful change in engine development, like going back to the days of normally aspirated bigger engines for instance. Sure it talks of cheaper costs, but that and more simplicity can be achieved with the current spec power units by 2021.

The road car relevance part seems to ensure that any future engines will need to improve fuel economy and thermal efficiency even further than the present, that's the biggest direction of travel in petrol/hybrid road car engine development for the foreseeable future.

The aims set out can be interpreted in so many ways they just sound like a sop to us fans and the world media, the devil will be in the detail.
