Sprint Quali 2022
« on: February 15, 2022, 05:07:30 PM »
There will be 3 races with "sprint qualifying" this season: Imola, Red Bull Ring and Interlagos.

The biggest change is in the points. This season the top eight finishers will be awarded points in an 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 set up.

Might get a bit more action in these Sprints then with more points on offer.

Oh and they're not Sprint Quali's anymore Cos, they'll just be Sprint races.
Also pole in the record books will go to leader of the pack in Fri Quali session.

Really? This seems like it's heading towards a series of sprint races rather than a full GP race in which to score all the points.

I also don't like the fact that it seems some venues are more important than others. This will have all sorts of strategy implications, such as engine changes in the previous race or even designing your car to target those races with more points on offer.

It's devaluing the whole F1 season.

There's always been more/less important races.  The first and last races.  The first/last of back to backs, first European race, first fly away race.

You're right that teams will have specific weekends they target for success, meaning there are weekends they're willing to 'write off'.  It gives smaller teams an opportunity to target those weekend to maximize their own seasons.

I assume the sprint is still 'experimental', and will eventually be available to any host track that wants it once the formula is ironed out.

What. A. Mess.

The incentive to overtake still doesn't pay off compared to the racing consequences, it still means the race is split into two and it still means most viewers will miss the first part of the race (and not through meaningful choice).

You're obviously talking about rest of the world Alia, in UK the Sprint race will still available in highlights show on Ch 4 free to air TV on saturdays.
