Danica Patrick Publicity Stunt
« on: May 03, 2008, 09:46:27 PM »
The F1 team Honda's chief executive Nick Fry has offered to open talks with Danica Patrick about a test drive in the near future.

The 26-year-old American said late last month she was "dead set" on eventually joining the grand prix circus, following her recent breakthrough win in the IndyCar series.

"We haven't instigated anything, but if Danica wanted to be test driver then we'd be more than happy to talk about it," Fry is quoted as saying in the British magazine Autosport.

Patrick said she would consider any offers of a "proper" test drive, after turning down a run in the BAR-Honda at Indianapolis in 2005 because she feared it was a mere "publicity stunt".

"Every driver would love to drive a formula one car at some point in their life, so yeah," she said.

"I don't think there's anything wrong with a real, proper test."

Danica would be a perfect fit at Fry's team: Lots of show, very little go.

That's a bit bloody harsh, Danica has shown she has the right stuff by that Win. She showed real race craft by holding back to conserve fuel so she could put herself in a position to win. She was also no slouch in most of the race to be in a position to use the tactics.

Following a strategy properly to put yourself in a position to win is a pre requisite in any team, it's not just about raw speed and adrenaline.

Unfortunately you have a point about Honda at the moment, although it pains me to agree, it is too much show and only the occasional go.

Perhaps I was a bit harsh, But after watching her get top flight equipment and bounce it off of walls, while the press fawns over her, one gets a bit bitter. I'd like to see Sarah Fisher get a shot at a good car.

You and me both Cos,Sarah always was the
best of the 2.She's going to have her own
team this year and run Indy and a few other
racs but I'm not expecting a lot as I think
she'll still lack the equipment

Since when did the best drivers get the best machinery, it's always been either politics, contacts, money or media attention that has put drivers in top class cars. I would be glad to see either Sarah or Danica given a shot at F1, but only in a reasonably competetive car, as it's time we gave the fairer sex the same chance and equipment as the guys

The previous efforts in the 70's to get women into F1 was more about a novelty for PR purposes and the cars were always tail end teams.

This means of course unless Honda get a substantial move up the pecking order it will turn into just another publicity circus if a girl chooses to drive for them. I'm sure Danica has more sense than to join Honda in their present position on the grid, after all she has already successfully got herself into a top drive in Indy so I think she knows the score.

Mind you, after Honda's latest PR gaffe, they might conclude that they need Danica on board simply for distraction value...

I realize that Danica has some talent, as she must to be able to compete with the guys on an even keel. But she would never have gotten the good eqipment if she didn't look like she does. Sponsers want something they can sell.
And it never hurts to have a pretty face attached to your product.

But what the hell, she should test for Honda. But only if they are serious about giving her a shot if she gets a chance.
