Fernando Alonso rules out podium finish at Silverstone
« on: June 29, 2008, 08:03:48 PM »
Despite a relative good performance during the qualifying session in last weekend’s French Grand Prix, former world champion Fernando Alonso has ruled out once again a possible podium finish at the upcoming British Grand Prix at Silverstone, suggesting that Renault will be able to go only into the points.

“At this moment I do not know if we’re in a position to get closer to the other teams,” the Spaniard told Spanish newspaper As. “I don’t think we can go much better at Silverstone,” he continued. “There have been races at which we seem to have improved but then the car is slow in the race with a lot of fuel. In the British Grand Prix, we will go into the points and not much further.”

The car doesn't deserve to be anywhere near a podium but he could just get it there before the end of the season.  Especially if the guys in the top two teams keep finding new ways to take themselves out of the race.

If anybody can get a Reanult there. I agree that the Renault is simply not there.

Though I'm no longer a fan of Alonso following his behavior at McLaren, I've been really impressed by his driving this year and his obvious desire to get themost out of a mediocre car.    Piquet, OTOH, has only his pass of Alonso in the last race to recommend him. The lad needs another year or two in the minor leagues, methinks.

Not all youngsters come good - Antonio Pizzonia being Exhibit A in that regard (though Jaguar politics certainly didn't help him). It doesn't help that Renault don't actually need him to come good; they need him to be on the team (to convince the sponsors to stay on board and pay Alonso's wages) and to not get Alonso's way...

No Scotty, it certainly didn't help Antonio's cause that he crashed in one of his early PR gigs...
