I read this article on improved safety barriers & thought I'd pass it along. Long time GT racer Spencer Pumpelly makes a good case for tire curtains. These are tire stacks that are fastened together into rows. Several of these rows, or "curtains", are set up in front of the wall with a gap between each row.
Pumpelly points out how these do a much better job of safely slowing cars that run full speed off the track & straight at the wall. He refers to them as "rogue cars." I agree with him that this should be made more common.

Brilliant idea. And these barriers are only labour intensive, not expensive in any other way. Great way to generate a bit of local cash to hire low skilled labour to put them together wherever they race with loaned tires on their way to being recycled.
It's the rogue cars that scare me anyway. Most racing accidents are walk-away's, but a stuck throttle (Schumacher) or unconscious driver (Massa) with his foot in it are the most terrifying and potentially dangerous. The FIA should pay attention to safety improvements like this instead of screwing around with the engine penalties.
