Title: Ferrari Gives Up on 2011
Post by: cosworth151 on August 06, 2011, 10:29:36 PM
It looks like Ferrari is giving up on this season. Stefano Domenicali says that they will concentrate on the 2012 car after the beginning of September. Spa is the only race left before September. Ferrari is 168 points behind Red Bull and Alonso is 89 behind
Vettel.

I reckon this is just media fodder, we are in the holiday break after all, and Ferrari is covering all the bases. Most teams will have started their programmes for next season, but I see nothing in the paras below (from racer.com) that suggest Ferrari have given up looking for wins or making this years car faster.

"At the start of September, we will concentrate solely on next year, because we have already defined all the updates for the 150° Italia [the 2011 car], at least up until mid-October," said Domenicali. "Sure, if something was to change, then we would react accordingly.

"In fact, apart from the area that concerns the exhausts, [and] on August 23 the Technical Working Group should shed some light on all the grey areas, the regulations are practically unchanged and therefore, development on today's car can also be useful for next year............

Domenicali said the aim for the rest of the season was to keep pushing for victories and pressuring Red Bull.

Poppycock!! Ferrari have the resources to develop the 150 Italia ongoing, and have the 2012 contender well under way by now.

They might have the cash to do so, but do they have the expertise available to spread engineering imagination across two projects?

(Although I agree this seems like story made up by bored F1 reporters)

I think "Ferrari Starts Work on 2012" would be a more accurate headline - by defining so far ahead, they can leave a "reactive" team on the 2011 and use post-mid-October updates to start development cycles for 2012 stuff.
