Jet Powered Eco Jaguar Supercar? There are so many words that don't belong together in that headline. Or do they? Read on....

Jaguar delivered one of the surprises of the 2010 Paris motor show with the new C-X75 supercar concept car.

The C-X75 is a two-seater supercar, but it’s biggest surprise is hidden under the bonnet. The C-X75 uses a pair of micro-jet turbines acting like a diesel-fed range-extender and Jaguar claims this solution means this concept car is even cleaner than contemporary hybrids with carbon dioxide emissions of just 28g/km.

A zero-emission, battery-only range of 68 miles is possible, before the twin jets kick in to charge the batteries. And with the four motors working in tandem with the turbines, a 205mph top speed is claimed. When operating at 80,000rpm, each gas turbine requires 35,000-litres of air a minute which means we needed a series of carefully honed air intakes.

High-performance is what the C-X75 is all about. Four 195bhp independent electric motors, one to drive each wheel, produce 780bhp and 1,600Nm of torque. Combined with the two gas turbines, which produce 95bhp each, the C-X75 has a staggering 970bhp at its disposal.

The 0-62mph sprint flashes by in just 3.4 seconds, while in Track mode, where the turbines provide supplementary power to the motors, a top speed of 205mph is within reach. Even more remarkable is that a six-hour charge of the lithium-ion batteries from a standard mains supply allows up to 68-miles of emissions-free motoring. Even in range extending mode, which lengthens the theoretical range to 560-miles, it emits just 28g/km of CO2.

Weighing 35kg each, there are several benefits to using gas turbines, instead of a piston engine, as a range-extending power source. With fewer moving parts, they don’t need oil lubrication or water-cooling, which saves weight. They can run on diesel, biofuels, compressed natural gas or liquid petroleum gas and they reach operating conditions in seconds meaning they’re efficient in short bursts.

With a motor on each wheel, the C-X75 gets a very lightweight four-wheel drive system too. Another benefit is the ability to vector torque to the wheel with most grip. Add to that an aluminium chassis and panels made from the same material, and on paper the C-X75 promises to be nimbler and more powerful than any Ferrari, Lamborghini or Porsche.

It sounds like they might be using Auxiliary Power Units (APU's). APU's are small turbines that provide electrical  power to jet aircraft aircraft when their main engines are off.

 Very cool, good find Wizzo. :good:  But what does it sound like - if it's anything like the normal hybrid vehicles it'll be a big disappointment to a lot of people.

Part of the problem with the auto industry is that it's filled with car people.

Car people will keep making new cars just like old cars.  This is the kind of innovation needed to move cars forward.

I will miss the rumble of a big block V8, but there's just no need for them in the future.  Besides... I bet you can get a good sound out of a turbine powered F1 car, right?

I watched the Lotus Turbine Indy cars in person and they were almost silent, just a soft whoosh as they passed.

mmmmmm, great looking rear end, slim in the middle, great look up front...wait..what was I talking about? Oh yeah, GREAT LOOKING CAR!

But it's a Jaguar...A JAGUAR!!!!! Jeremey Clarkson needs to take this out for a quick boot around the block before I pass final judgement.

The hybrid Jaguar supercar has been cancelled due to economic conditions, but working prototypes will be sold

Jaguar has delivered the shock news that its C-X75 hybrid supercar won’t make production as originally planned. First revealed as a concept at the Paris Motor Show in 2010, the £1m flagship sports car was intended to enter a small production run of 250 units in 2015, but Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar Global Brand Director, has confirmed that’s no longer the case.

“When we first announced the project, during the worst economic downturn this country’s even seen, we expected things to have improved by now,”  “But considering the economic landscape as it is and the austerity measures, making a £1m supercar seems wrong – especially when there are more important projects we are working on.”

Despite the news, five existing prototypes will continue to be developed until fully functional by a small team of Jaguar and Williams F1 engineers who were assigned to the project. “We’ll keep chassis one for ourselves and then at least two of the remaining prototypes will be sold to collectors,” Hallmark revealed. “An auction seems the only fair way to do it.”

There are still plenty of positives to take from this project. Jaguar has managed to make the 500bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged and supercharged F1-inspired engine, which revs beyond 10,000rpm, work in sync with an extremely lightweight electric motor for a total of around 900Nm and 900bhp. An advanced liquid-cooled and air-conditioned battery pack allows a 60-mile zero-emissions mode, while according to Hallmark the C-X75 is “quicker than a Bugatti Veyron, but emits less CO2 than a Toyota Prius.”

“We’ve patented more than 100 technologies during this project, and many of those we’ll continue to develop for our other road cars,” said Hallmark. “Things like high-performance turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engines, and electric motors to boost smaller engines are all being considered.”

The aerodynamics were significantly redeveloped for the prototype, too, with 17 radiators dotted around the car and a series of new vents and intakes around the bodywork. No images are available of the redesigned car yet, but Hallmark has confirmed that there will be media test drives in early 2013.

That was a ballsy move from Jaguar, probably in a expectation of a better economic climate. Too bad we could not see this beautiful project bloom the way it was intended.

But I have a feeling Williams people will manage something out of this car for the regulation changing 2014.
