Really? What sport is it?  :P

They were having a World Cup during the 2006 USGP week-end. A group of Brit Williams fans invited me to watch a match with them.

I asked, "What happens if you lose?

"We get p!ssed!"

So I asked, "What if you win?"

"We get even more p!ssed!"

...and that's exactly what we did.

Oh, oh...I feel for England's goalie.  Only a couple billion people are (or more likely have already) going to see that goal.  Absolutely the toughest job on the field is to be the goalie.

On the other hand the USA have only their goalie to thank that it wasn't a 6-1 romp.

Just woke up with the worlds worst hangover and this reminder that we through away 2 points in our opening game and that my grid game picks are way off after qualifying the day can only get better

OMIGOD!!!  Switzerland beat Spain 1-0.  Switzerland hasn't beaten spain in the last 19 meetings they had, and Spain is European champion!

There are some drunk Swiss wandering around...   :D :D

That's what makes the 'single game' tournaments so intriguing... at this level, any team having a good day should be able to beat a team having a bad day.

On Canadian webboards they're wondering what a soccer coach even does (no frequent substitutions like in hockey or basketball, no complicated play chosen from hundreds like in American football...) he's the guy that makes sure the team doesn't have a bad day.

That's because here they don't call them coaches - they call them 'trainers'.  Which is more appropriate for the job they do.

Among other things, they train them how to fake knee injuries.   :D :D ;) ;)

I've had one good thing come from this World Cup. When my daughter gets out of line, I threaten to buy her daughter a Vuvuzela.

Other than that.........

I flag for Italy/Brazil/Spain, depending on how they does at their own serie. England has italian coach (Fabio Capello) who has won championships in italian and spanish teams so England can do good result. Yesterday I watched South Africa-Uruguay game and Uruguay was clearly better. Tonight I watch France-Mexico that begins very soon.
Please keep me up to dated how the England game finished! ;)

There are lots of surprises so far.

Germany lost to Serbia 0-1
England draw with Algeria 0-0
Italy draw with NZ 1-1
Portugal beat North Korea 7-0 (I never expected such a big margin)

Can't agree that the Portugal result is suprising Judy, I thought they should have got even more, but the rest certainly are.

I agree that Portugal could have beaten them by even more goals but before the match I never expect such a results. They lost to Brazil by only 1-2 (I missed that match) but based on the scoreline with Brazil, I did not expect them to get thrashed so badly by Portugal.

The Portuguese that live in Switzerland are usually the star players on the local teams, they are a football crazy country.

Unfortunately the Swiss lost tonight to Chile 1-0.  We are hoping to at least tie the next two games to advance.  Pretty amazing the Swiss are even in it considering they are such a tiny country.

If Lampards goal had been given it would have been a diffrent story. We wouldnt have taken the risk at the back looking for the equaliser. We were poor but robbed at the same time.

I feel sorry you guys from England and US must be grieving over the World Cup exit. I know you guys from England are very upset with the poor refereeing which robbed England of one goal. Argentina was awarded a goal that they don't deserve on the same day. I just heard from the news broadcast that FIFA is now willing to discuss the possibility of introducing goal line technology to overcome the inconsistencies in decisions related to goals.

I think this technology should have been incorporated in the World Cup matches long time ago. In the past World Cup, there were always controversial decision related to goals. At least this time the controversial decisions are not biased towards the host nation, as in the past.

I doubt many people in the US know that there is a World Cup on, and that it doesn't have anything to do with sailing or tennis makes them even more confused.

The general opinion I've heard around here is, "Good. Now SportsCenter will get back to stuff we actually care about, and we won't have to hear about soccer for our more years."
