A bad crash at the end of the Daytona race when car parts broke through the catch fencing. Hope the injured spectators come through it.

The spectators seem to be awfully close to the action there! :o
Doesn't leave much room for error. Hope everyone is OK.

Everyone was not OK. 28 spectators were injured by flying debris, two were originally listed in critical condition, but they have been upgraded to fair. In all 14 of the injured were taken to hospitals, the others were treated at the infield care center. It should be mentioned that this race was the equivalent of F3000, one step below the top in NASCAR.

They remind me of the crashes of old days, seriously the safety must be top notch no matter what sort of racing is going. It could have killed many.

That was nasty. Did you hear that NASCAR tried to suppress that video where they showed the wheel in the stands and fans frantically trying to get a medical team there? Youtube actually pulled it for a few hours and then reinstated it when they went through NASCAR's reasoning a bit more closely. :crazy:

A NASCAR Cup car weighs 3,400 lb (1,542 kg). At any given speed, it carries much more energy than an F1 car (1,415 lb, 642 kg) or IndyCar (1,565 lb, 710 kg in road/street course trim). Add to that the fact that, on a super speedway, the cars are at maximum speed almost all of the time. NASCAR was very lucky that it wasn't much, much worse.
NASCAR needs to seriously reconsider it fencing before the next super speedway race at Talladega on May 5th. At the very least, they need to mandate wheel tethers ASAP. I'm surprised that they haven't done that years ago.

Joe Saward says the best chance they may have of collecting is on the wheel coming over the fence. The fence itself did what it's supposed to do, stop the car from coming into the crowd. Most of the injuries that occurred were from flying debris, which should be included in the waiver you assume by buying a ticket. If you love racing, you shouldn't want to kill it with a liability suit. If NASCAR helped with the hospital bills I'd be content.
