Post by: TheStig on April 12, 2008, 11:19:36 AM
Silverstone, the famous Northamptonshire circuit, is celebrating its Diamond Anniversary in 2008 marking 60 years since the first ever British Grand Prix in 1948. The Silverstone Supercar Showdown, taking place on 19-20 April and featuring the opening round of the FIA GT Championship and the Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy, is also Silverstone’s first event of the 2008 season and, linking in with this year’s ‘60 year’ theme, will feature a 60 Million Euro Paddock.

The Silverstone Supercar Showdown will be the FIA GT Championship’s only UK appearance in 2008. Famous sports car marques including Aston Martin, Corvette, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Porsche and Saleen will be battling it out in nine races over the weekend, presenting a combination of super cars valued at 60 Million Euros.

The FIA GT Championship will feature more than 30 of the most prestigious GT supercars, with models including the Aston Martin DBR9, Corvette C6 and C5, Ferrari 430 GT2, Lamborghini Murcielago, Maserati MC 12, Mosler MT900R, Porsche 997 GT3 RSR, Saleen S7 R and Gillet Vertigo cars.

While in the FIA GT3 European Championship, entering its third season of GT racing, a grid of over 45 cars will be taking part in two one-hour races. Eleven different models are represented, including the Ascari KZ1R, Aston Martin DBRS9, Corvette Z06, Dodge Viper Competition Coupe, Ferrari 430 GT3, Ford GT, Ford Mustang FR500 GT3, Jaguar XKR GT3, Lamborghini Gallardo GT3, Morgan Aero 8 and Porsche 997 GT3 Cup S.

The GT4 European Cup is then expected to feature a grid of more than 20 cars, including the Aston Martin N24, BMW Z4 Coupe, Ford Mustang FR500 GT4, Nissan 350Z and Porsche Cayman in GT4, and the Ginetta G50 and KTM X-Bow in Sports Light.

Finally, the Ferrari Challenge will also be returning to Silverstone, with both the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli and the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli Coppa Shell. Around 60 cars will be competing between the two series.

The on-track action promises to be spectacular, featuring race versions of the cars we all aspire to drive competing in five different Championships and Cups, and for one of the most historic and coveted prizes in motor sport - the Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy. Autograph sessions, pit-walks and an ‘open-to-all’ paddock will provide exceptional access to the stunning line-up of competition supercars. Advance tickets are available from as little as £20 for race day and £25 for the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) while tickets will also be available on the day.

Entry is free for children aged 15 and under, accompanied by an adult. Families will also be entertained away from the track with a fun fair where all rides are free of charge.
