From the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) website:

After a two-year hiatus since its last Champion was crowned, SCCA’s Trans-Am® Series will return in 2009, with a planned eight-race schedule for the series which held its first race in 1966.

Five of the eight races were announced today at the Performance Racing Industry show, in Orlando, Fla., as well as the series’ title sponsor for 2009—Muscle Milk®.

A joint venture between Sports Car Club of America, Inc. and subsidiary SCCA Pro Racing, the 2009 Muscle Milk® SCCA® Trans-Am® Series will consist of six events in conjunction with some of the biggest SCCA Club Racing events across the country, creating powerhouse SCCA weekends, and two key professional events. Technical rules will be based on the SCCA Club Racing GT-1 class.

The Trans-Am started as a sedan racing series in 1966, but quickly became a showcase for the then-new "pony cars" like Mustang, Camaro and Javelin. The cars were production based with 5 liter  v8 engines. Many top teams, like Penske (Camaro, later Javelin) Dan Gurney's All American Racing (Barracuda) Carroll Shelby (Mustang) and Bud Moore Racing :yahoo: (Cougar and Mustang) raced in the series. Drivers included Peter Revson, Parnelli Jones, Mark Donahue, Swede Savage, David Hobbs and Jerry Titus. American manufacturers developed special models for the series, like the Mustang Boss 302, Camaro Z/28, AAR 'Cuda, Cougar Eliminator and, most famously, the Firebird Trans Am.

Later, the series went to "stock appearing" cars on full race underpinnings. In its final seasons, it was run under licence by Champ Car as a support series.

I've been told by friend in the SCCA that the Big 3 wanted the series to return, once again to be a showplace for Mustang and the newly resurrected Camaro and Challenger.
