Title: Richard Hammond in critical condition!
Post by: Wizzo on September 20, 2006, 09:41:44 PM

Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is in a critical condition in hospital after a crash in a jet-powered car while filming for the programme. The presenter, 36, was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary which has a special neurological unit.

A North Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesman said he was unconscious when they got to the scene and a hospital spokesman described him as "critical". The Top Gear shoot was under way at Elvington airfield in north Yorkshire.
Inspector Mike Thompson, of North Yorkshire Police said: "At 5.45pm this evening we received a report via the fire service of a male person trapped in what was described as an overturned jet car which had been driven on the airfield.

"The male occupant has received serious injuries and has been airlifted to hospital at Leeds."

I am sure you will join me in wishing Richard a speedy recovery.

A huge outpouring of public support has emerged over the last few days, while Hammond himself appears to be past the worst of it.  :good:

To date, over £170,000 has been donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance (http://www.justgiving.com/phrichardhammond), which whisked him from the site of his jet car crash. Hammond’s wife Amanda reports that Hammond has been walking under his own power, and that over 40,000 messages of sympathy have been received.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance are considering purchasing a second helicopter and naming it after Richard (the hamster) Hammond due to the large sum of money raised on his behalf.  :yahoo:

HAMMOND LEAVES LEEDS HOSPITAL!  :yahoo:

Richard has left Leeds General Infirmary, just a week after the crash that left him in intensive care. He impressed doctors with the progress he had been making since the crash last Wednesday.

Doctors said yesterday that if he continued his rate of recovery, they would allow him to be transferred to a hospital nearer his home in Cheltenham. And today it was confirmed the 36-year-old, who had suffered a brain injury after the crash in a jet powered Vampire car, had left Leeds via air ambulance to go to the Bupa hospital in Clifton, Bristol.

Health and Safety Executive officals and the BBC are all investigating what caused the crash.
