Cosworth to Build IRL Engine?
« on: August 21, 2010, 01:17:03 PM »
Cosworth has said that it might be interested in building an IRL engine. This would be for the new 2012 "turbo minivan" spec. It sounds like they might be more interested in an I-4 than a V-6.

Certainly would be nice to have Cosworth back!

I wish IRL would return to multiple engine
and chassis.
Mark Twain once opined, "it's easier to con someone than to convince them they've been conned."

I rather like their 'single chassis/multiple shell' idea.

It's an excellent compromise between budget and variety.

Obviously any serious fan will pine for the heyday where there was tremendous competitive variety on track, but a return to that will require building the sport back up.  This is a step in the right direction.

OK you're Ford and you want to come back to Indy. You develop an aero-package and an engine. What do you call it? A Ford Dallara Ford? And why won't this lead to expensive wind tunnel wars, or 1 aero-package dominating?

It's been announced from the beginning that the name Dallara won't be used in any official records or press releases. For example, if a team uses the Lotus aero pack with the Cosworth engine, it will officially be a Lotus Cosworth.

Anyway, could that be more far fetched than the "Chevy built by Ford" engines? The body/chassis package is the best they could do at this time. It's the minivan engines that will kill the remaining interest in the series.

Mini-vans still sell very well in Ontario.

Maybe IRL is making a serious stab at the Canadian market once again!

Baby strollers (prams) sell very well, too. I wouldn't care to watch someone race them, though.

(Minivans are frequently called "Baby Haulers" here in the States.)
