I feel older every time something like this comes up. I was in my truck at the time working as a courier when I heard the news.

I remember it too, Darrell. When a friend told me what happened, I thought it was a bad joke.

Don't feel bad, Ian. I remember when they brought a TV into my 1st grade class so that we could watch Alan Shepard become the 1st American in space, aboard Freedom 7.

Can't believe that was 25 years ago. I remember watching it on TV, I would have been 10 at the time.

It really was terrible, they were warned not to launch as well, people should have been jailed for that.

If you are then I'm getting there! I remember the first moon landing even though I was only 6 years old. I wanted to be an astronaut after that!

I was working, thought it was a joke at first. The seldom discussed side effect was that they completely abandoned the Teacher in Space project. What a wasted opportunity, and in a way makes Christa McAuliffe's sacrifice in vain.  :DntKnw:

Although it was a terrible tragedy it highlighted just how dangerous launches into space are, you literally ride a massive controlled explosion when reaching for the stars. I think that the American space programe never suffered the same level of failures that the Soviets experienced in their rocket development and a bit of complacency set in.

Me too - Grade one, they brought one of those black & white TV's in (they were built onto a 5ft high trolley).  I don't think I was all that awestruck at the time, but I never forgot it.

I didn't see Challenger live, but remember watching it late at night while on a night shift at a hotel I was working at in Jasper.
