Somewhat off-topic, but possibly an interesting tangent - the operator of the fair at the British Grand Prix last year got fined £4000 including costs because one of the rides got corroded and two people were injured riding it during that weekend. The inspection company who said the ride was OK to use beforehand was fined £11000 including costs.

I wonder how many people haven't figured out that stuffing your face with Clownburgers & fries day after day while sitting on your backside will make you fat.

Should every electrical outlet have a sticker, "WARNING: Don't stick your tongue in here."?

As for the guy that put his ladder on a frozen manure pile and fell, he should try to sue Charles Darwin. That isn't the ladder manufacturer's fault, that's Natural Selection in action. This whole notion of "I'd did something really stupid and got hurt. Quick, who can I sue?" needs to be brought under control.

Extending Ali's tangent, one of the most stupid is...Warning, may contain nuts. This is on a packet of peanuts.  :fool:

I've seen that as well Ian, trouble is by trying to stay the right side of one law can lead to possible infringement of another.
The dictionary definition of may is 'possibility' or 'used to express possibility'. So the epithet 'may contain nuts' it could be argued might fall foul of the trade descriptions act; a bag of peanuts must contain nuts not just have a possibility of nuts.  :D

If obesity figures are anything to go by, about a quarter of the population (in the UK). As Albert Einstein once allegedly said, "There are only two things are infinite, the universe and stupidity... ...and I'm not sure about the former".

The dead can't be sued. Of course, the magic words "don't touch that ladder until you've been taught how to do so correctly" would have removed all liability from the employer.

I put water in my milkshake instead of milk by mistake this evening and I didn't sue the water or milkshake company even though the resulting brew tasted rubbish. Sadly not everyone is entirely acquainted with accurate attribution of error.

I think it was a farmer using his own ladder.

You don't know American lawyers.  ;) We have many, many TV ads from lawyers basically saying, "We'll sue any one, any time, any where." One of my favorites shows a car air bag going off. The inflated bag has the lawyers name on it.

That is my point. Unless the law clearly states where liability lies. American lawyers will sue anyone for any reason secure in the knowledge that juries hate big corporations and will award money to people just on general principles if given the opportunity.

Ah, but the FIA isn't a big corporation. It would have been safe until it was stupid enough to perform an action that definitely gave it a share of the liability. (Red Bull and Pirelli on the other hand...)

In America, the FIA would be viewed as a big "corporation" by almost any jury. They figure most large entities can afford to give money to an individual.

Not only would the FIA be viewed as a big corporation... they'd be seen as a big FRENCH corporation.

They wouldn't stand a chance in front of a Texan jury.

A charity is not a corporation... ...though I can see how being big and foreign would be a big black mark against the FIA ;)
