NHL 2012 - 2013 Season.
« on: October 22, 2012, 11:30:04 AM »
I am going to be in Canada over February and was hoping to see the Canucks play in Vancouver. I don't really keep up to date with the NHL that much but I have been reading a little about the lock out and the first two weeks of the season being cancelled.

Can any of the forum members enlighten me as to what is going on? When the season might getting underway? Would they really cancel the entire season? Surely too many fans would be lost doing this.

The NHL doesn't make the news in Australia and I don't know what to believe on the internet. Any info and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Aazz.

It's not looking good. The two sides are talking on the phone, but, as of last night, no bargaining meeting are scheduled. The two sides are reported to be between $320 million and $550 million apart. Right now, all games through 1 November have been cancelled. Thursday is the deadline to get the games restarted on the first.

This season's All Star Game is scheduled to be about an hour away from me in Columbus. I hope it happens. I don't know if the league could survive cancelling another entire season like they did in 2004-05.

That's why I just about stop following pro sports
here in the US. Between greedy people on both
sides to drug scandals who cares any more?

NHL hasn't had a serious drug scandal yet :)

There are of course individuals with substance abuse problems, but nothing systemic.  Though there are whispers, but there've been whispers for years.

As for the greed... as an F1 fan, it's funny watching the different sides fight over what amounts to Bernie's chump change.

I was referring to baseball's steroid issues and if I was talking about
the NFL I'd be talking about felons[imprisoned or not]

Hockey lost me long ago when it allowed the bully boys to take the speed and skill out of the game. Just as basketball lost me when it became a contact sport.

I've been a hockey fan most of my life, but this might finish me off. How they're handling the strike in Columbus:

Hilarious.  If the athletes and owners don't stop getting so greedy and pricing the game, merchandise and the rest out of our reach it won't be too long before we have 'Real Steel' type of scenarios, with AI and robotics replacing expensive, greedy and delicate athletes.  Just a guess...  :DntKnw: :D :D

I have noticed that the season is going to start soon but now the schedule has disappeared from the Canucks and Kings website. There was only one game that fitted in with my holiday plans, I hope it doesn't get moved. Does anyone know if the schedule is likely to change?

I got to go to the hockey after all. My sister flew in from Dublin and organised a few tickets. The Canucks had a win against the Minnosota Wilds, which was a bonus. I enjoyed the game a lot and will go again if I get the chance. It was big day and night getting in half a days skiing in Whistler and then getting a bus to Vancouver, going to the game, sleeping on the floor of a mates place and then getting the 6:30am bus back to Whistler and another full day of skiing!

I love holidays!!!

Nice job.  Nothing like seeing a live NHL game.  We have good hockey here, but being there with 20,000 other fans is quite an experience.
