2008 Regulation Changes
« on: March 25, 2006, 04:43:59 PM »
There are going to be some changes to F1 in 2008. I think some of the ones listed below are going to raise some eyebrows.

The major changes are:

* Engine specification to be frozen from 2008-10 with designs having to be submitted to the FIA for homologation by 1 June 2006

* A single tyre supplier to be appointed for 2008-2010 following a tender process  :)

* Slick tyres re-allowed  :good:

* A ban on all tyre-warming devices  :o

* Testing restricted to a maximum of 30,000km (18,600 miles) per team per calendar year

* A ban on spare cars  :DntKnw:

* A weight penalty of 15kg if an engine is replaced before the end of its two-race cycle, replacing the current 10-place grid penalty system

* Gearboxes to last four races with a 15kg weight penalty for each change

* Drivers whose cars stop on the circuit during qualifying will not be allowed to take any further part in the session

* Requirement for new teams to lodge a $48 million deposit with the FIA dropped

* Major car manufacturers will be not be able to supply engines to more than two teams

Thoughts on the above please.

Seems OK to me Wizard, not sure about banning the spare car though!
Good to have the slicks back!

Seems fine, a weight penalty rather than a 10 place drop seems good.  The abolishment of the $48 million deposit can only be a good thing to get new teams.  Spare cars banned?  Hmm. not sure, but I suppose it will bring a bit of excitement to a GP weekend if a car has an accident in quali/practice.

A ban on all tyre warming devices will make qualifying and the start of a race very interesting indeed.  :o

I have never liked the 10 place penalty for an engine change and as we have seen recently drivers can make up these places in a lap or three. Having to carry a 15kg weight penalty for the entire race is much more of a penalty.

Banning of the spare car - If a car is damaged then the pressure falls on the engineers to work all night to fix it. If it is beyond repair then that driver will be out of the race, not good for any race.

A single tyre supplier is good, all teams will be on the same level where the black stuff is concerned.

As ellie points out a saving of $48 million has got to be good news.  :yahoo:
