Grosjean's contract
« on: May 27, 2013, 08:35:03 PM »
Not sure if this has been posted anywhere previous about Grosjean being on a three race rolling contract or even if it is true, but today I overheard that as Monaco is race three of his current "three races" there is a rumour he might not even make the grid in Canada.

Has anyone heard anything about this at all?

Haven't heard a thing about the 3 race contract.
Mark Twain once opined, "it's easier to con someone than to convince them they've been conned."

I just found this Dare. At the bottom it confirms the rolling contract but not the rumour about him being dropped.

I guess the question worth discussing is who could replace Grosjean?

Does Lotus have a test driver experienced with this year's car (and more importantly, tires?)

Would they pluck a driver from Caterham?  (Or another Renault powered team?)

Heikki fits the bill, doesn't he?  Has there ever been a team of Finns?

I think I'd like to officially start that rumour right here.

The rumour was touted in the BBC commentary during the highlights, just after Grosjean hit the wall. The three-race contract thing was news to me, though I knew he'd had some sort of restriction on it (I'd assumed before this that it was simply an expediated exit procedure if Lotus was unhappy or something).

Davide Valsecchi is Lotus' reserve driver, so there would be an Italian on the grid for the first time since the start of last year if the rumour becomes true. He's not experienced with cars or tyres, so the threshold for Romain keeping his seat has to be pretty low. (Kovalainen's auditioning to re-enter Caterham, and while I think he has a good chance of getting in there, it's unlikely to be quite this early in the season).

I also didn't know about the rolling contract.  No wonder Grosjean has looked like a man under pressure at times this season.  Monaco was a very bad weekend for him, but he has generally done a better job of keeping his nose clean this year, so I don't think that it would benefit Lotus to replace him at the moment.
