It is amazing how much prices can vary, not just country to country, but in smaller regions too.
I live about one hundred miles north of Chicago, where the article accurately claims gas is $4.44. But just 100 miles away where I live we pay about $3.30.

It's the same around here. Yesterday, it was $3.45 here in Lancaster. About 25 miles away, in Londondery, it way $3.19.

I remember on a holiday in Toronto, the gas prices changed throughout the day. High in the day then it dropped a lot in the evening for a reason I never sought to find out. There were queues every night at the filling station.

Maybe someone can shed some light on it for me...?

My Dad was an area supervisor for an oil company back in the '60s and 70's. He would drive around his area twice a day seeing what local prices were. If any brand dropped below what his stations were price wise, he would order all his dealers to match the new low or even undercut it. Of course, they drop the price trying to get more business, but it's a very reactive market, if one brand drops, the others will soon follow. Oh, and while he worked at this job, gas was often as low as 19.9 cents a gallon.

The gasoline companies in Canada are often being scrutinised for collusion, because they follow the same practise of setting their prices based on the prices of competitors.

The public seems to over react to price differences. 10 cents a gallon is about the most I ever see between cut rate brands and Chevron/Shell etc. At that rate a 15 gallon fill up costs an extra $1.50, hardly an earth shattering difference.

Lonnie, here in Louisville we see at times a 50 cent difference
in the price of a gallon of gas in a range of 25 miles. No one
ever explains why.

That's the beauty of a free market, it's more suspicious if they all charge the same.  :D

I was also wondering about how much fuel we really get at the pumps, does say Lonny in Arizona get less calorific value than Jeri in Canada?
F1 measures fuel in weight, they say the volume varies according to temperature. How much difference could this make to us, or because it's stored underground at a stable temp until it's dispensed - is there no difference?  :DntKnw:

Toronto in the summertime was extreme.  I remember when I lived there, the morning radio stations would have a quick mention of where the cheapest gas was in the city and what the price was.  You could save 20cents a litre by driving across town.  I was always amazed that I could get gas cheaper in Toronto than in Calgary - which is Dallas north.  Oil country.

Around here, every station in a given area does charge exactly the same. For example, yesterday, every station here in Lancaster that I went by (at least a dozen or more) were all at $3.47.9. A few days ago, every station I saw in Lancaster was at $3.45.9. On that same day, every station I saw in Londondery was at $3.17.9 Every station I saw in Tarlton was $3.25.9. The collusion appears obvious.

I've always wondered about this, are we being shafted at the pump? Probably.

I remember when the teams used to super cool the fuel to pack as much in as densely as possible. Not sure in the real world if the difference would be significant.
