2022

Anybody give any thought to how 2022 might unfold? Who will be quick out of the gate? who will bring up the rear? Who will be surprisingly quick? Who will underperform? Thoughts? Predictions?

with 2022 being new car designs (but oldish power units), it'll be foolish to make any predictions.

So here I go

1)  SOMEONE is going to have a world beating idea at winter testing.  The question is 'who?'.  Counting Newey out is always a bad idea, but I'd like to see a surprise, so my official prediction is that Alpine finds the crazy idea everyone else scrambles to copy.

1B)  Someone will have a crazy idea that totally fails.  Usually Williams finds those.

2)  The new cars are going to require a new driving style, some drivers will adjust well, some drivers will not.  I expect Max's aggressive style will continue to be rewarded.  My prediction is that Ricciardo masters the new style early, and finds himself in the championship hunt.

2B)  Some drivers will not adjust.  Look for Russell and Bottas to under perform.

3)  Covid is still a force, we'll probably lose some races.  Australia and Canada (I was hoping to get out there this year) are likely gone for sure.  France and Italy will be at low capacities.

4)  The championship will be close for much of season, Max/Lewis/Alonso/Ricciardo all winning multiple races and solid podium performances.  Max will win with 2 races to go, with RBR winning the WCC, with McLaren making it close.

With current covid rates, I'm thinking we will have races with half the grid being in quarantine. Might be a chance for those in the other formulas to get the odd drive. Could work out well for Piastri.

Hard without much to go on since the cars will be very different this year, but here goes:-

Williams will climb firmly into midfield and Albon will be the new George for them. They'll be battling Alpine & Macca.

Aston will finally start to show their promise and also be in the top 5.

George, after a couple of slow starts will find his feet and take the fight firmly to Lewis, but will the car be a real front runner? I say no until later in season.

Verstappen bouyed by No 1 on his car will blitz the first few races.

Ferrari will take over 2nd spot pushing Merc into 3rd for first few if not half year's races.

Haas and 2 alfa/alpha teams will have battle for lowest places.

Now if any of them come true I might have to become
more adventurous in my GG picks.   :DD :DD

I hope to see Haas return to its form of several seasons ago. They've spent the past 2 seasons working exclusively on developing the new spec 2021 2022 car and they have Mick to drive it.

Nikita will sadly probably continue to be a crash looking for a place to happen.

Like Jeri, I think one of the big early season stories will be that at least one of the front rank or mid field teams will miss the mark by a mile & be stuck with a massively under performing car.

No predictions from me but more about what I shall be looking for: -
  • LH's 8th title.
  • GR to show he's as good as most people think.
  • MV to be less aggressive.
  • Stewards consistency.
  • AA to show good form.
  • Williams to make the midfield runners.
  • Track limits to be enforced everywhere.
  • A season without controversy.
I know its just idle dreams! ::)

I'm with you on every point, except the last.

If there's no controversy, what are we even going to talk about?  "Nice pass"?

I shall make some crazy suggestions.

  • Mercedes will continue their dominance with a strong engine.
  • Red Bull will find Max Verstappen a new partner mid season.
  • Lando Norris will find himself in the Championship battle.
  • Lewis Hamilton will adopt an aggressive driving style.
  • & lastly, Yuki Tsunoda will win his 1st Grand Prix.

I do hope that Singapore GP will go ahead, I really do miss the trackside action!

You think those two bullets would be related?

Who else would possibly be 'called up' to Red Bull?  Gasly, again?  Albon, again?  Maybe Bottas clearly hemmed in with a sub par Alfa?  LeClerc tired of being #2 at Ferrari?  (Though, going to RBR would still be a #2)  I think that Vettel could rejoin RBR any time he wanted, maybe he and new boss at Aston Martin don't get along, necessitating a mid season split.

Or... if you want a crazy prediction:  Hamilton does NOT re-sign with Mercedes, taking a 'year off' from F1, and halfway through the season decides he wants back in.  He would join RBR going head to head with Max in identical machinery, but without challenging Max directly for WDC.

I have a feeling RBR would be frustrated with trailing Mercedes yet again despite Max Verstappen performing well. It might be between Pierre Gasly and Sebastian Vettel I suppose, Yuki Tsunoda would still be too green and inconsistent to be promoted.

Just wanted him to win at least 1 race because Asian Pride!  :yahoo:

The BBC says he's not yet sure to return: https://www.bbc.com/sport/formula1/59951382

So my prediction is Hamilton calls it a day - in his heart he knows he's an 8 times world champion. Mercedes buy Alonso out of his contract with the money they save on Hamilton's salary and Alonso becomes the oldest world champion in the "modern era".

To me this is just so much eyewash. Lewis and Merc are trying to keep as much pressure as posible on the FIA to get the result they want over changes to either the race director or the rules around what can, & especially what can't be done, during and at end of races.

If Todt was still in post they'd know it would be an uphill battle, but the new president is an unknown quantity and they are trying to put as much pressure on him as possible. My read is they may find the new man a stronger match than Todt, the new boy will want to stamp his authourity at the Place de la Concord.

Anyway Lewis can't re-sign he's already contracted for 2022, he can however resign/give up his seat a la Rosberg.

IMHO Lewis will be on the grid at the first race, he's got too much unfinished business & hurt pride not to be there. If not he may forever be known as the champion who shied away when the going got tough.

My understanding from last season is that Mercedes basically stopped developing their car back in May in order to focus on the 2022 car.  I am not sure Red Bull did likewise. So barring a maverick development amongst the other teams I have a hunch that maybe Mercedes will wipe the floor with the other teams.  They will be on fire with a take no prisoners attitude that's for sure.

I also hope the race director (whether Masi or not) will be up for the challenge. I don't see Lewis ever again yielding to Max to avoid a crash so I see many more incidents between the two.

It is also my understanding that Mercedes stopped developing the 21 car early in the year although some planned upgrades of the ICE continued.
RBR definitely continued to develop their car with lots of quite significant aero upgrades and several ICE upgrades.
I think the future of RBR will depend upon how much involvement Honda continue to have with the Power Plant.
RBR may well have stolen several Mercedes engineers by paying (as reported) up to double Mercedes salaries but that isn't the same as having power plant specialists that have worked as a team for years with access to the knowledge and equipment provided by manufacturers like Mercedes and Honda
