Disc Rot
« on: June 21, 2007, 05:18:48 PM »

Blu-ray is kicking HD-DVD’s butt and with the recent news of Blockbuster choosing Blu-ray as its high definition format to replace DVDs things look bad for HD-DVD.

Now here is the bad news for Blu-ray, engadget is reporting about a potential problem with the disc media that is being described as disc rot.

Basically mould-like spots have formed and made several owner’s Blu-ray discs unplayable (open the windows then people and stop the damp), well joking aside this could be a big problem for Sony’s Blu-ray format.

Many people are claiming they are discovering spots which can’t be rubbed off on Blu-ray discs, we are not sure how widespread this problem is but it leaves you wondering how much damage this could cause the Blu-ray name.

The original video disc players, those old ones with the disc bigger than an old LP record, had the same problem. It was know at the time as "laser rot." It was caused by the plastic of the day not being able to stand up to the laser used to read the disc.
