Do you have any obsolete skills?
« on: March 30, 2008, 11:48:17 PM »
Some of our 'older members' might relate to this site.

Robert Scoble has come up with the idea to make a list of 'obsolete skills.' He describes these skills as things we used to know that are no longer very useful to us, a few examples include:

1. Dialing a rotary phone
2. Putting a needle on a vinyl record
3. Changing tracks on an eight-track tape
4. Shorthand
5. Using a slide rule
6. Refilling a fountain pen
7. Operating a dictaphone
8. Using the eraser ribbon on a typewriter

The community has started to create a much larger list of these obsolete skills, check out the full A-Z list. http://obsoleteskills.com/

anyone remember the old coke machines with
a crank on them, coke was a dime or 10 cents

buying cigs in a machine and the change
would be in the cigarette pack

when the most amount of gears on a
bicycle was 3

when fast food was a special treat you
got maybe once a month

Other obsolete skills:

Editing autoexec.bat and config.sys to get games to work (if you've never heard of them, then fear not - few people have needed to edit either for about 10 years!)

Taking films out of cameras without dropping the containers

Parking drive heads

Figuring out what train I need to catch to go somewhere

Recording stuff onto tapes

Since this is a motor racing site does driving a car with three pedals now count as obsoloete?

Chatting up girls might be an obsolete skill for some of our 'older' members, hehe

Claw_Grrrl says that it is for me, anyway! Since we've been together 23 years as of last Friday, I am a bit out of practice! ;)

Anyone remember:-

Changing gas mantles on the lights in a caravan,
 Using a pay phone,
 De-cokeing an engine,
 Double de-clutching,
 Sending a Telex message,
 ....or even winding a watch!

Last used a payphone last week when my mobile went flat. Some seemingly obsolete skills may not be completely so ;)

Maybe I was a touch to bold with the Pay phone Ali.

Still it's good to see you young people keeping the old ways alive for the next generation, hehe! :D

Well, I am rather scatter-brained about charging up my phone, and even the fanciest mobile needs power...

How about television before the remote
controller or cable tv.

way down on the channel surfing.
