Next years cars will look very different
« on: October 13, 2008, 10:06:28 PM »
According to Aldo Costa of Ferrari next years cars will look quite different, he was speaking to Autosport about falling behind with KERS but made these comments on the look of the 2009 car.

Costa also said next year's car will be strikingly different due to the radical new regulations that will come into play.

"The front wing will be striking because it will be as wide as the car's track (the distance between the wheels on the same axle). A lot of them will come off because, since they cover the wheels, it will be easy to lose them in crashes.

"On top of that, the rear wing will be taller and narrower, the bodywork smoother and more sealed off because we won't have the current liberty of opening air vents anymore, and this has forced us to heavily re-design the cooling system."

I've seen a few photos of a prototype. The tall, narrow wing will take some getting used to. I doubt the sponsors will like the lose of that much prime advertising space.

I don't like that at all but I guess
we'll all get use to them.

KERS is a damned silly idea and adjustable aero is utterly illogiacal captain but the thing that I find utterly insane about next year's regs is that some moron decided that it was a good idea to have full width front wings.  Every little bump is going to result in a pit stop for a new nose.  I could see the point if we had never had wide wings before but we have and they broke all the time.  I know the FIA can't be expected to see into the future but I thought hindsight was meant to be 20:20.

They're going to start looking like Sprint cars pretty soon.  For you Brits who don't know what I'm talking about - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprint_car_racing#Winged_Sprint_Cars

The goal for next years car was not only to reduce downforce but to reduce the influence on the car behind.  A wider wing in theory allows the same amount of downforce to be created for less drag so less wake to influence the following car, this is compounded by a smaller rear wing which means they cant crank the front wing downforce up too high without ruining the areo balance, so even less wake than before.

Apparently the current cars need to be 2s a lap faster than the car in front to get past on merit, and next year it will only have to be 0.5s, will be interesting to see.

On the breaking wings front, I am a freak in these parts in that I do not belive the FIA are as dumb as they are made out to be.  I would say they have been quite machiavellian on this and are happy for more broken wings to mix the order up, it will be cheaper than installing randomly operated sprinklers at all the tracks which I have suggested elsewhere.

cheers,
Cam

I think sprinklers on the track is a brilliant idea Cam you should start a campaign ill certainly back you. Noone likes change and i agree the new cars are looking a bit strange but im sure everyone will soon get used to them.

Paul Ricard has sprinklers that can flood the track
