Car enthusiast and artist David Deal, best known for creating a line of model cars in the 1970s called “Deals Wheels” and then later for work on the movie, Cars, died after a battle with cancer Oct. 14 at his home in Vista, Calif.
I first came across Deal's artwork in late 60's, when he was writing for CARtoons magazine. He was also doing the advertising artwork for the old MG Mitten sports car supply firm.
In addition to drawing cars, Deal was an avid driver, setting an off-road record in a Volkswagen sedan in 1973. He also enjoyed hot rodding and sports car races.
Deal owned a number of interesting cars over the years, including a Porsche 550 Spyder and a Ferrari.
When not behind the wheel of a land-going craft, Deal was an avid pilot, notching more than 2,000 hours of flight time.
his style was unmistakable. He will be missed.
