G'day all,
I'm hunting down opinions and advice from some of our more learned, budding or even pro photographers.... head on over to: http://www.flickr.com/photos/romephius/ and check out what I have there.... please feel free to comment with any advice or even just what your thoughts are.
And if you'd like to know exactly what equipment I'm using, you can message me here to get a full listing of what I have.
Thank you in advance for any advice.... and for those who just want to look, feel free.
Rom
P.S. Not too far off having the internet on again at home..... properly.... only too almost a year...
-
Good ones Rom, one question though, in....Reflections of a car....Where's the car ?
-
The photo is actually the reflection of sunset through a tree off the bonnet of my work car. so the whole photo is actually a car.... :P
-
Good stuff, Rom! The fireworks and night skylines came out very well, and I know how difficult that can be. It's so easy to wash the colors out,
I know it's the standard refrain, but shoot as much as you can. Experiment with different exposures, filters, etc. It's the best way to learn. (and much, much cheaper than it was in the film era.)
-
Doh, just looked again, hehe, can see the shape of it now. :good:
-
Top notch Rom,I like the fireworks shot and the horse most of all
-
Thanks everyone.... I've now added 3 more shots.... all from saturday afternoons storm....
-
Some really nice photos! I love the ones of the moon, and the 3rd with the clouds and tree has really great composition.
-
Lauren, Rom is our very own David Bailey. Joking aside, they are great photo's.
-
Rom's the talented one here.Ian and me come with the place.
-
Some nice pictures there Rom. My personal favourite is the Dam, don't ask me why :DntKnw:
-
Thank you everyone.... oh and Lauren... don't believe Dare.... Cos is the very talented photographer here.... he has some amazing shots taken when F1 was still racing in Indy..... I'm just a rank amatuer trying to get better....
-
Thank you for that, Rom. I think the only difference between us is that I picked up my first 35mm SLR in 1970. I had a Polaroid 104 before that, and a box Brownie before that. You're a very good photographer, my friend, and you'll only get better with time and practice. :good:
-
You are far too kind Cos my friend. But I will certainly keep practicing and saving for better equipment.
I've added another couple of shots, both of them were a case of me being in the right place at the right time.
-
Love the two you just added Rom, coming to Aussie to live in Vanuatu. :good:
-
Can i come too? Please
Ju
-
But which one will you live in??? Australia (which has an F1 race) or Vanuatu???
:DntKnw:
-
Thats a tough question Rom, I rather fancy Australia after watching Aussie tv from the website you posted during the floods.
-
Well as pretty as vanuatu is, I couldn't trade the developed country benefits of living in Australia... and besides... we have some pretty comparable scenery in north Queensland.
Plus I'm here.... :P
-
Oooooo....This is a tough one...An F1 race or a nice quiet Island...mmmmmm
If i pick Vanuatu maybe you will let me compromise Rom? If Fernando is allowed to come and visit me I will pick Vanuatu hehe
Then i can have both :D
Ju
-
Rom, 35yrs ago I would have emigrated to Australia in a flash, alas I'm too old now. :'(
-
Sorry Ju, No nando in Vauatu......
You are never too Old Ian.... but when you win the lottery (shared win with Ju) you'll all come over and we'll go karting. lol
-
No Fernando :'( :'(
Awww but thanks Rom that's a great idea i can be your flight buddy Ian and we can show Rom how to really Kart ;)
Ju
Ps if you read this Neil, say nothing about Ju + Karting :nono: :-[
-
I should warn you guys that last time I went karting a whole group complained about having to race against my housemate and I..... apparently we were too fast to race against..... :)
-
Wow! Ian this sounds like a challenge ;)
Ju
-
If I win the lottery Rom we'll over for the challenge, so it looks like your pretty safe.
-
Never say never my friends..... I might win the lotto and come harrass you 2....
-
That would be no problem my friend. :good:
-
Well I have added 3 more pictures taken today just before lunch time.... they say it is possibly the only time we will see something like this.
-
They are cool pictures there Rom :good:
You must have been so close. Seeing them in formation like that reminds me of the Grand Prix when i saw the red Arrows :D

Romephius,
I would like to comment on your pics, but I am not sure if you wanna read it... I say so, because I am only short of becoming a professional photographer.
First things first: you've got a good eye on it and for amateur pics they are better then average. Far better.
I'll pick some, I see many things same mistake.
Mind your background (IMG_0014, fence; _MG_0263, powerline; _MG_0198, stable; _MG_0184, pole)
To be honoust, the pics are getting better backgroundwise, on page 2 and 3.
Some pics are far too dark, try to lighten them up or add more contrast (_MG_0006; _MG_0205; _MG_0202; _MG_1381; Little flower)
The composition of colours in the little flower and IMG_0014 are nice, but you could enhance them digitally. Brighten up the flowers, make them more sharp in colour so they get caught by the eye.
About IMG_1077, make sure you got more DOF, or Depth of Field. If you want to focus on the waterfall, make sure the leaves in front of your camera are a bit faded. You can do that by setting your diaphragm to a smaller number (preferably 2.7). That give you a better idea of how far away the waterfall is and how close the leaves are. See attachment for what I mean. Take a look at the white flowers in the front to get the idea.
The pic I like best is IMG_0006, closely followed by IMG_0200. Just add a little more colour, digitally. Make them speak for themselves. Don't overdo it, just a little.
You've got a good hand an a good eye, I do like the way you look at things for taking pics, but you wanted a fair answer. Do not be offended, try to learn, as I am still learning.
-
Thanks mate. Some great advice there....
However, I am a bit of a purist when it comes to my photo's, I prefer not to do anything to them digitally as I like to show what I saw with my eye. I definately wish to get better, but, it's also about showing life through my eyes. I agree some of the shots were terrible for interference, but, I was working with limited time to get the shot.... so I just snapped.... lol.... but I will certainly try your advice and I'll let you know the results.
-

So what your saying is......cheat ;)
Ju
Ps no wonder some celebrities look so good :DD

No, not cheating. With enhancing, I mean just brighten up the colors. I was not talking about photoshopping, just brighten up the colors. A photo is always a bit flatter in color then in real life. But I understand the point of Rom. I guess with a little bit more time, the pics could be far better.
-
I have uploaded some adjusted shots of the F-18's from last week.... have a look now mate.... I think you will like the difference..... I'll admit.... it is better.... Once you've compared I'll pull down the un-adjusted ones.
-
They are MUCH sharper Rom, some great photo's there mate. :good:
-
Not cheating at all, Ju. That's why many of us had our own darkrooms in the pre-digital days. It allowed us to adjust the brightness, contrast, cropping, etc. Digital manipulation is much the same thing, only much easier (and cheaper!). The creative process doesn't stop when the shutter clicks. :good:
-
I guess your right Cos, a little bit of tweaking doesn't hurt. Sometimes people alter things too much though.
Two examples are...I saw a picture of Fernando and it looked like he was wearing make up :o That is just wrong, it ruined my fantasy..i prefer the rough and ready look ;)
Secondly, I also saw a picture of the river and bridge near me once and it had tropical blue coloured water....If anyone has ever been to the river Orwell I am sure they will tell it it is brown and muddy and occasionally frothy. Anything but blue hehe

Color change can be a good thing, too. My daughter's ex was a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. I took a picture of Angie in her black and yellow Steelers jacket. I tinted the yellow parts orange and digitally pasted a Cincinnati Bengals logo over the Steelers insignia.
It greatly improved the picture. I blew it up and had it hanging on my living room wall for a few years. :good:

Well, I guess my answer has been given already! Looks much better.
I am not of the photoshop. Just enhance the colour. I already stated why. Like it much better.
-
I have now added 2 more pics taken using a 20 second exposure with the monochrome pics with an NDX400 filter, the second (colour) pic was almost 3 minutes with the same filter.
I hope you all like them.
-
2 more pictures are up now.... both of a wreck on a tiny little beach at sunset.....
Enjoy
-
As always I welcome comments either on flickr or here... thanks for checking them out everyone....
-
I have now added some more pics from today's little trip to Natural Bridge in Springbrook (about 100km south of me). As always comments and suggestions are welcomed.... you can find them over at www.flickr.com/photos/romephius
Enjoy guys and gals.
-
I like your pictures Luke :good:
That looks like a really quiet nice place to visit.
Is that far from where you live?
Ju
-
Beautiful pics there Rom. :good:
-
Thanks Ju and Ian.... Personally I thought that todays pics were a bit of a failure... although the naming of them was fun... lol....
Ju, Natural Arch (Bridge) is just over 1 hours drive from my house... in some really fun bendy hills... all rainforest so it's just amazing scenery.
-
I think they are cool pictures Luke. Sounds like a cool drive to get there as well. You have some nice places in Australia to visit :good:
Ju
-
Think about it Rom, the eyes and the brain tell you what you like, to me they look really idyllic.
-
The scenery is magnificent, I just failed to capture it correctly.... that's all....
And Ju, there is more than some and much better than nice too! lol... I truly live in an amazing and diverse country... People here have no idea how lucky they are.
-
Love the Moon shot Rom. :good: Not too sure about the new cave and water subjects, for me they seem to lack definition somehow. The shots containing the fall and cave have the appearance of an artwork composed of two subjects rather than one varied scape, as an artwork they'd be good composition as one image it seems to lack cohesion. Still 10 times better than I could do though. ;)
-
Thanks John,
The cave with the waterfall was a wide angle shot... I had just enough to capture both parts in the one shot, but, I needed some more light to show the rock wall in between.
I wasn't entirely happy with the shots I got today... but I had promised some friends that I would put them up....
-
How about some wildlife photos Rom?
-
Any specific wildlife in mind?? or just any typically Aussie wildlife I can capture in the bush???
-

Just typical, but any snakes or crocs be careful
-
Well I have been at it again.... only 2 new shots this time.... unfortunately the weather was against me for this one... I was lucky enough to capture a few shots of the eclipse last night.... however with all the difficulties involved I only managed 2 decent shots.... still not as sharp as I would like... however they are acceptable.

Nice pictures as usual Rom.I'm thinking on buying a
telescope and doing a little star gazing.
-
If I wasn't buying so much camera gear I'd look into getting a telescope too.... let me know how you go mate....
-
I wasthinking on this cheap telescope Romand then if
I enjoyed it I could always buy a better one later

Very nice pictures Rom :good:
Dare you should have a word with Neil. He has a telescope for "looking at ladies across the meadow" hehe
What was her name again Neil?? Miss Ponsbury?? hehe
Ju
-
Nice pic Rom. :good:
If you are buying a Telescope Dare my advise is spend the money for a decent one. I purchased one last year, it wasn't that expensive and I was pretty disappointed. The tripod makes a big difference, my one wobbled about and made it a curse to use.

Ju
Ju, just to put the record straight, that telescope is used entirely for scientific purposes only. Not once has it been used in a voyeuristic nature, and it has certainly never been used to ogle at the young Miss PONSONBY in her pink bloomers parading around her boudoir, that is some 400 yards away across the aforementioned meadow.
Anyway, sorry for going off topic Rom, some nice snaps there mate.

A 400 yard shot huh,the student has su :good:rpassed the teacher
Sorry Rom,you still considering catching some wildlife on film?
-
Thank you guys and Gal,
Very cool with the telescope. I may look into purchasing some stuff for Astro-photography... but that'll be around $5,000 AUD just for the starter kit.... :P
I will get some wildlife yet... it's just a matter of having the time to go out and capture it.... :) I will try during the christmas break I'm being forced to take....
In the meantime check out this guys stuff... some great motorsport shots in here.

-
Thanks Rom,but just photograph it and don't take
any chances catching it,serpents are Neil's speciality
-
LOL.... not literally capture them.... capture as in take photos... :P
I may be pretty silly more times than not... but I'm not completely bonkers...
-
Our Neil got himself the large size telescope. He didn't get the tripod, either.
-
Oh i am sorry i got her name wrong Neil ;)
I thought you said she wore a little black number? Nothing about pink bloomers hehe
Ju

Yeah, that's one of my telescopes Cos, I lent it to ol' Deppo, still ain't got it back ::). That was straight once, Mrs Prodworthy put pay to that, she only went and sat on it after I'd left it on the chaise lounge after trotting off to bed one night. Still, that'll teach me for not putting my equipment away after some strenuous scientific gazing.
However, every cloud... and all that. It transpires that the telescope is brilliant for those difficult tasks, now that it can see round corners. You know, the ones where it's best that you are out of sight. Just the ticket for checking out various wildlife and other stuff...
