Title: Liberty sanctions an F1 Soap Opera!!!!!
Post by: John S on June 10, 2023, 09:34:29 AM
First it's 'Drive to survive' then we get F1 films in the works, now we get the full blown Soap Opera TV serial.  :swoon:

Will there be any viewers left to watch races?????  :P

Well, I ignored 'Drive to Survive', I'm sure I can ignore this. I just hope they aren't filming on the grid.

If it's on Netflix, I'll be not watching by default because I'm not getting Netflix.

I assume it won't be much about the racing, else I wonder how they will make a soap opera about the same guy winnning all the time seem interesting!

I thought F1 already was a soap opera.  ;)

It's like driving by an accident, you slow down and look then move on.
It will be checked out by many but discounted very fast once stupid scenarios and poor writing occur.

Drive to Survive has succeeded wildly in bringing new fans to the sport.  Whether they stay or not is a different question, but if they don't come, they'll never stay.  I find that DTS isn't great for a knowledgeable fan, but F1 isn't trying to bring in knowledgeable fans with it.

If this new drama/soap opera brings more fans to F1, and they find an interest in the existing product, then that's a win too.

I don't feel that DTS has changed the product very much.  I suppose the new street races that are more about the party than the race could count against DTS, but I also feel that once DTS fans become 'knowledgeable fans', they'll crave the better racing at dedicated/historic road tracks too.

So if we get more F1 fans into the sport, I'm okay with that.  If they can get enough fans, then the cost of watching may go down as sponsors want eyeballs more than they want subscriptions.  (Hey, a girl can dream, right?)

Now if they made a series about F1 in the 60's with actors
portraying my favorite drivers I'd watch

There is an American tv show called 'Young Rock', it is about the childhood of Dwayne Johnston, aka wrestler 'The Rock'.  Johnston's father, Rocky Johnston, was relatively famous wrestler in his own right, so much of his childhood revolves around professional wrestling with a fantastic group of actors portraying the famous wrestlers of the 70s through the 90s.

They could certainly do a similar show featuring the Hills.

Young Rock just got cancelled. Watched 2 episodes was enough for me

Certainly not for everyone, but if you're a fan of wrestling, or a fan of The Rock (and I assume there's very heavy overlap there), the show was great.

I'm just saying that a show about the Hills would be a great way to feature drivers of different eras in a single show.

Like my drivers I like my wrestlers from the 60's.  Buddy Rogers,BrunoSammartino, and don't forget Dick the Bruiser

The thing I enjoy about Drive To Survive is it shows the unsanitized comments from team members and drivers that you will never hear if all you watch is the regular races as they are presented. All driver and principal comments are usually well monitored and preapproved by the media liaison in the team so nothing is said that can cause issues. DTS gives the real unvarnished version of events and actually allows the viewer to know the real person better.

Yes.

I'd go so far as to say there are more young people following it on the basis of soap opera than as "entertainment" or "sport". (The ones following for "sport" left in the last 18 months and "entertainment" is too vague to appeal much to that demographic).
