General F1 Discussion / Re: Christian Horner F1 RBR team principal cleared by inquiry

I hope this is all over, and that everyone involved feels that justice has been served.

I do worry that F1 being a mega money organization might be sweeping things away.  I hope I'm wrong about that though!

Hope this is an end and we don't see lots of other stuff leaked to media in an attempt to prolong this saga.

Seems to me bullshit that has been pedalled by a certain Dutch news group may not be as accurate as they would like us to believe.  >:(

Cool Stuff / Max Verstappen vs World's Fastest Drone

Red Bull partnered with a Dutch drone company to create the world's fastest (camera) drone to race Max Verstappen at Silverstone.

A few thoughts:
  • This is an incredible view of F1.  It is almost like watching a video game
  • When Max is racing in the wet, you get a much much better idea of what the spray is like trailing behind the car.  (Martin Brundle always points out that we don't really appreciate from TV cameras, but the drone lets you see that the spray remains hundreds of feet behind the car)
  • Red Bull has found an interesting way to get around cost caps.  They used their own aerodynamicists and materials experts to help build the drone.  A great way to keep F1 people on full time pay even if they aren't working full time at F1.  Other teams should certainly look into giving their employees part time work on other projects.  (Or maybe they do?  McLaren, and Ferrari are busy in other series)

General F1 Discussion / Re: Looks like Red Bull sitting pretty after F1 testing

I don't think the cost cap is working very well. The grid still lines up pretty close to budget, rich teams in front and cheap teams to the rear. What's the point of keeping Haas in the field if they are always at the back?

Well, F1's popularity and value are both at an all time high.  They're in the position of turning big name investors away, instead of begging companies to buy up second teams, or relying on single dollar buyouts to keep teams afloat.

So in terms of what the cap was meant to do, it really is working well.

Now, as fans of the sport who dream of a 26 way title fight it, we clearly see it's not helping with that at all, and we worry that if the sport becomes dull and predictable, as it very well could with a cap holding the teams in stasis, that the popularity and value might fall away and could very well kill the sport we love.
