Famous actor Charles Laughton starred in many great films, (Mutiny on the Bounty, Witness for the Prosecution, The Private life of Henry the Eighth). He directed many stage plays. However, he only directed one film. It was a failure when released, but is now considered a classic.
What was the film, and who was the male lead?

Night of the Hunter
Robert Mitchum

Mitchum's performance as an evil, psychotic preacher is truly haunting.

Who was the second actor, in chronological order, to play James Bond in a movie?
-
Sean Connery (if by chronological you mean within the bond universe).
Otherwise it was the woeful performance of ...... .......
Just realised I was gonna put a second answer in.... so to be fair I'll wait...
Rom
-
I was looking at cinema movies only for the answer to this Rom, so Mr Connery was Bond number 1 in 1962 according to my list, sorry.
I have discounted the 1954 TV version of Casino Royale starring Barry Nelson for 2 reasons, it was made for TV and the character was called Jimmy Bond as it was an American show.
-
Aussie actor George Lazenby. On Her Majesty's Secret Service was his only Bond film. Connery returned for the next one, Diamonds are Forever.
-
And I was referring to the bond universe (chronologically), so therefore Daniel Craig (the most recent actor playing bond) would be the first as he only becomes a 00 in casino royale, which would have made connery the second bond.... but you get that.... Cos is spot on the money....
I love the bond movies... got them all..
rom
-
No sorry Cos, Lazenby was the 3rd actor to play James Bond, there is someone else at number 2.
-
maybe David Niven
-
David Niven was the first, Sean Connery was the second.
-
maybe David Niven
You're right Dare. :yahoo:
Sean Connery Starred in Dr No in 1962 so was the first Bond then David Niven became James Bond in the 1967 spoof version of Casino Royale so was the second actor to play Bond in a movie. Lazenby was the 3rd in 1969.
Your turn Dare.

Walt Disney originally released his shorts and movies through other studios: Columbia Pictures, United Artists and RKO Radio Pictures before forming his own distribution company. (Just like Bernie, he knew where the real money was!)

In honor of Sunday's race -
In what 1950 movie did Clark Gable play a race driver? The race scene in the movie features actual footage of the 1950 Indy 500.
-
To Please a Lady?
-
Very good, John! Over to you.
A bit of trivia. The #37 car that Gable "drives" in the 500 is actually Joie Chitwood. Chitwood was the founder of the Joie Chitwood Auto Thrill show. He was also the father of Joie Chitwood III. The younger Chitwood was CEO of The Speedway until a few months ago.
-
Interesting trivia footnote Cos. :good:
OK, keeping on a motoring theme which Movie has a 34 minute car chase, reputedley the longest car chase of any film, wrecking 93 vehicles during the making of it?

Is that The Blues Brothers? (Best car chase movie EVER.)
-
I read somewhere that they bought most of the Chicago police force's fleet of police cars to make that. Too bad the cigarette lighter didn't work. ;)
-
Is that The Blues Brothers? (Best car chase movie EVER.)
No Jeri, sorry. The film I have in mind is from 1974 and had two american racecar drivers and a race promoter who all played themselves in the movie, although it is not about motor racing. A remake in 2000 was more successful but without the full 34 min car chase or any racers.
Yeah I have to agree the Blues Brothers had a massive wrecking spree as well the great music.

Lonny
-
Rio Grande? If that's right I think it should go to Cos for the hint!
-
hints don't matter, the right answer does
;)
-
Sorry, Rio Grande is not the right answer. Cos is close, but The Duke actually made this movie 3 times: Rio Lobo, El Dorado and ??.
Lonny
-
That means it must be "Rio Bravo" released in 1959, the first of the 3 films on the same theme from Howard Hawks, all starring "The Duke".
-
Correct. I actually saw a scene from this film being shot at Old Tucson in 1958. This is the one that stars Wayne, Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson. Cossie had the right actors, but the wrong title. Over to you John.

Speaking of movies that were made three times-
There were three film versions of the play The Front Page. One was made in 1931, with Adolph Menjou as editor Walter Burns and Pat O'Brien as reporter Hildy Johnson. Another was in 1974 with Walter Matthau as Burns and Jack Lemmon as Johnson. The 1940 version used a different name. Name the film and the two stars.

A first in motion picture history, what movie cost more for obtaining the rights to the soundtrack outweighed the entire production costs for the film itself?
-
Big Chill?
My second guess would be Happy Feet since the only star in it was Robin Williams and it was packed full with great music (I just watched it with my kids).
-
Could it be Mama Mia? Abba would probably want a lot for the music rights.
-
Clerks
-
Clerks
The cost of obtaining the rights to the soundtrack (approx. US$27,000) outweighed the entire production costs for this film (approx. US$26,800) - a first in motion picture history.
