Schumacher gets pole record - Or does he?

Michael Schumacher made Formula One history yesterday by claiming pole position for the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, breaking Ayrton Senna's record in the process.

The pole position mark was the only significant Formula One record that Schumacher lacked. The German has won seven world titles, two more than Juan Manuel Fangio.

The last major record that stood was Ayrton Senna’s legendary pole record of 65 poles. That record fell yesterday when the German claimed his 66th Formula One pole position in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Ferrari’s home track - Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. It will be the sixth time that a Ferrari driver has started on pole for the San Marino Grand Prix.

Schumacher picked a poignant venue for his 66th career pole position, in front of Ferrari's home fans and at the track which claimed the life of Senna 12 years ago.

End of story?, not quite.

At the 1997 European Grand Prix in Spain, Schumacher crashed into Jacques Villeneuve in what some believe was a deliberate move, and the sport’s governing body disqualified Schumacher from the final standings of the season.

According to some counts, the disqualification also deprives Schumacher of the three poles he won that year in Canada, France and Hungary. Without those, Schumacher’s total is 63.
