"History" Judges Irvine
« on: July 02, 2008, 02:48:05 PM »
I went on The History Channel's website. They have a link to see what happened on your birthday in various fields. I entered my birthday (Nov 10), then chose Automotive. It came up with one reponse:

Quote
1965: Irv the Swerve born in Northern Ireland

No mention of his full name, his sport or anything. Just that.

I guess someone at The History Channel really knows F1! ;)

Actually, clicking on the link leads to a nice little piece about him.

You can check your birthday at:

:DD Love that description for Eddie Irvine!

Apparently, nothing significant in motor sport happened on my birthday (March 26).

On my birthday, Egypt and Israel signed a peace agreement, and the polio vaccine was invented. For that matter, the first film was made on my birthday in 1885.

Henry Ford cranked up the first auto assembly line to produce Model Ts on my birthday in 1913, reducing the time needed to build a car from 12 1/2 hours to 93 minutes. :yahoo:

Volkswagen reaches milestone

The 2,000,000th Volkswagen was finished on this day in 1957. Begun 30 years earlier by the Nazi regime, the German automaker and its economical Beetle overcame their unpleasant pasts and began selling in the United States

First commercial film screened

The world's first commercial screening of a film takes place at the Grand CafÝ in Paris. The film was made by Louis and August Lumiere, two French brothers who invented a camera/projector called the Cinematographe. The Lumiere brothers first demonstrated their machine to the public in March 1895 and began charging admission in December the same year. The first film, shown on December 28, featured short clips, including a humorous segment involving a gardener and a hose. The brothers made 2,000 short films during the next five years.

Woodrow Wilson born in Staunton, Virginia

On this day in 1856, future President Woodrow Wilson is born in Staunton, Virginia. He attended private schools and graduated from Princeton University in 1879 before studying law at the University of Virginia and earning his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. He was hired by Princeton as a professor of political science in 1899 and went on to serve as the institution’s president from 1902 to 1910. As Princeton’s head administrator, he revolutionized its teaching program and was largely responsible for elevating Princeton to its current prestige. Wilson’s management of Princeton also earned the attention of Democratic Party leaders, who encouraged him to run for political office. Wilson once admitted that if he hadn’t entered politics he would have been happy to live out his life teaching and playing golf, his favorite past time.

Wilson’s political career, once launched, was meteoric. It began with his election as governor of New Jersey in 1910; two years later he was elected president of the United States, a position he held until 1921.

"In a Democracy, civil dissent and even disobedience is a responsibility and a duty. Indeed, the extent dissent is tolerated is in itself a test of a Democracy."
