Title: Hamilton doesn't owe F1 anything...
Post by: Scott on April 26, 2016, 12:18:28 PM
Pit Pass chose that headline, not me.

Strictly speaking of course, he's right.  I don't know why anyone "owes" F1 after they retire as a driver.  It's a dangerous sport, and surviving it intact and rich is how the vast majority of drivers get out of the sport, but there are still those who don't.  They are (usually) paid to do it, and that is a fair trade - time and effort for money, like the rest of the world.

HOWEVER...you don't do yourself any favours saying it out loud, and come across as fairly arrogant if you present it as if F1 being far better off with you than you are with it, like Hamilton apparently.  I think most of us would be happy to work in F1 or motorsports in general for the bulk of our lives if the opportunity presented itself and was lucrative to make a decent living.  I am impressed with drivers who continue on in the industry, whether as team members in another role, or simply media commentators.  I would think if you had a true passion for motorsports, you would do everything you could to stay in the sport one way or another after driving.  I was not even really a Coulthard fan while he raced, but as a presenter and commentator, I have grown into a fan of his (for example).
