Hard to see how a pothead, albeit a fast one, would be good for F1 in the 80s, even though we had a spate of hard living/drinking drivers in the 70s.

I liked Mears. Maybe if he hadn't had those accidents he
wouldn't have retired and won his 5th Indy. I would have liked
to see him in F1 for just one year

I was watching live when he had his crash and it was pretty bad. Rick generally doesn't complain but others say it killed his road racing ability since he couldn't operate the pedals properly with the constant upshifting and downshifting required.

I don't even remember Sanair CART races being televised, let alone practice. Woulda' loved it. :(
